Hello I live in the range of both Baltimore (winter) and Orchard (summer) orioles but I have never seen any despite growing up birding and stuff :((( I've checked eBird and there's plenty of sightings around where I live too
I was wondering if anyone knew of any good plants for them?
---
This is long sorry but I have the following planted already that I think are relevant (for fruit and/or nectar):
Annuals
Perennials
Salvia Amistad
'Black and Bloom' Salvia
Purple coneflowers (random collected wildtype seeds & orange ones from the __ spirit series that I hate the name of)
Purple porterweed
Firespike (several small thickets of them)
Milkweeds
Red hot pokers x 6 [should bloom next year]
Vines
- Trumpet honeysuckle
- Confederate jasmine
Shrubs
- Firebush x 6 (that I let get as big as they want)
- Dwarf butterfly bushes x 6 (3 of 2 varieties that were unlabeled)
- Bottlebrush that bloom year round
- Beautyberry
Trees
Redbud
Red Buckeye [baby still]
Hog Plum [taller baby but still a baby]
Dogwood [baby that I'm not sure is going to make it unfortunately]
Elderberry
Red Maple
Chaste Tree
Live oak
Water oak
Citrus
Established/untrimmed old crepe myrtles that are pretty tall for that species and have the graceful elm habit orioles like
Cabbage palm, Queen palm, Pygmy date, etc
My yard is pretty open but does have enough mature trees to attract canopy species like Yellow-throated warblers and vireos. I don't spray pesticides. There's a water feature (broken fountain I got as a freebie) that is used by a lot of birds, including the canopy species since its near a large Japanese privet. I'm also six houses or so from a tree-lined creek.
I'm almost out of space now (small yard) but if there's something I'm missing I'd be interested in hearing about it. really want these birds lol
