If I were to do the entire house white, I think I would choose Simply White. In my homes I have used that, acadia white, super white and I loved them all. But for a full house of white…yes, simply white.

It won’t be an awful job…you will use the same finish on walls and ceiling…best scenario I might do semi-gloss on the beams, but I don’t think that will make or break the room if you do that it flat/matte like the rest of the room. The beams are going to shadow, anyway...

You will get this look, which I think is pretty fantastic...

I'm curious if it would be possible to strip the beams and then whitewash them? Or is that just not worth the work?

Hello. You can paint them under color of a ceiling, or any other light color.

Another option would be to have the beams clad with another type of wood.

thanks JudyG! I would love to paint it white, I really love the look on the image you shared. I know my husband is going to say No to all white. If I am not able to convince him, would a light gray work better for the walls than the current color, painting the beams all white, and the walls in a really light gray (almost white). I have read Benjamin's Moroe Revere Pewter would be a good choice. What do you think?

No to grey. I don't care for painted beams, but in this case I agree that they should match the ceiling

That would be fine.

If you go white... painting them using the same paint as all other white trim would make them look intentional, and give a slight/subtle sheen contrast between a flat ceiling paint.

Before i painted i would buy new chandeliers. Those are dated and really destroy the look. Better lighting could be a better investment. Maybe just whitewash the beams. But figure out your room/home styling first. I can tell from the photos. If you do paint white use a slightly different finush like satin on the beams. Not too shiny.

I'm straying, but not really [cause ProFlo mentions the whole look]. What if instead of painting all, you bought/installed new railings....

I had never thought about a solid wall! so many options ha ha. Now. I have no idea.

I am going to stick with my original thought of all white. There are so many of the beams, and you say structural, but it doesn’t have that look to me…they dominate the room. Then with a different wall color you have that additional visual line cutting across the top of the room just looks top heavy to me.

I see you have gotten off on other topics, but I suggest you make no big decisions until you settle on how you will paint the room.

As for Revere Pewter…if your natural light is coming from south or north…yes…west light…nope.

I don’t think, at least at this point in your design, you need to spend money on new railings…here is where a can of paint could make a big difference. You paint the top rail black…I did this application in my house, correlating the color to my black stair case chandelier and it looks pretty darn good : > )

No, just in this space. I mean, at list in the main living floor, where the kitchen, family room and dining room are. I think it would look better if I have the same color in all these walls as they are all connected!

I agree they should be painted. You could do a white ceiling with your color walls or you could paint the ceiling the same color as your walls. Whenever something stands out too much it does need to be toned down. I think there are just too many beams.

here are 2 other pics that show better the railings and the right side of the room. I am sold on painting beams and walls with simple white. Thinking about railings and the space below the picture frame. I think a console table below the picture frame will look good, looks kind of empty there, don't you think? What kind of table would look good there? (or any other piece instead of a console table?) I liked these 3 I found online. do they work on the room? suggestions.

I wrote of basic metal look railings -- if beams were dark -- if it'd fit with that look.

If you plan to do something with railing, you really need a master plan so in the end all your changes will work together. I think for example, is you want to change railing I would just paint the handrail glossy black and possibly the newel posts the same. With that decision, all white walls and beams would move you toward a modern look that could include soft accessories. You could use a focused color palette so you keep it united. A larger rug would allow you to move sofa down a bit and get that chair on the rug. So lots of details make a big difference. You have a great deal of potential so do think about all items and decide on each so that even with a phased implementation plan, it will all work when finished.

I second simply white for the paint color and I would do all white (beam, ceiling and walls). I have simply white in my home (after trying 7 different whites on my walls) and have been very pleased with it. It is a clean looking white but with a very subtle warm undertone.

The tables are kind of rustic looking? Your sofa is modern, basket leans farmhouse, coffee table is kind of mission style so before you add anything get a focus on your style. The reason that wall space looks empty is because your furniture arrangement isn't cohesive. What size is your rug (and it looks traditional in style). If you slide sectional to to chair side of arrangement and relocate the rug so you can get chair on the rug, you could put a table behind the chair so you could put a lamp there. I would change your coffee table for a round gold hammered look metal. That would help tie together your pieces. I am going to find some photos for you so you can pull together your space in an eclectic kind of way. Bbl

You could go all white, and that is a nice look, but to me the visual problem here is those yellow walls don't match your cherry floor.

Because the paint is so dark on the beams, you probably need to use Zinzeer primer on them first before you paint them white, otherwise you might be touching up dark spots forever.

The ceiling color needs to be neutral; Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17 or Sherwin-William Alabaster SW 7008

With the red toned wood floors, the walls need be painted in a paint without yellow, pink or red undertones. You can continue with the ceiling paint or use another darker neutral on the walls such as Kelly Moore KM569-M Hamlet. KM Hamlet doesn't have any yellow, pink or red undertones, so it won't clash with the red in the floor. It is comparable to the tone used on the walls in the photo below.

The red floors are beautiful, but with them, you'll need the main paint colors to stay neutral and not introduce yellow, pinks, or red toned walls and ceilings.

If possible, I think the all white look could really suit the room and open it out even more. That said, I do like the white beams and alternating color from a darker ceiling/ wall combo. That looks great! Is the lighting up for review, or are they new? Something different like these could really look nice.

I think your floor is gorgeous and should be showcased. I agree with the no yellow undertones comment, but I've seen many rooms painted with very subtle pink undertones with that color floor and it looks great. Here is a great article about matching wood colors to wall colors. They are advocating for a balance of cool & warm, which might work for you:

I like the all white idea...ULTRA WHITE BY VALSPAR truest white I have found...get samples first. There are sooo many whites...pink whites, tan whites, grey whites...be cautious. I have made a mistake with buying the wrong white...turned out pink white. Get samples paint 12x12 panels and place in room. You will see what you like...colors change thru-out the day with lighting. Goodluck!

In our family room we painted the beams white...white ceiling and yellow walls. Looks so much better with the white beams.....clean and bright.

Our family room has a white ceiling, white beams and white walls. It's a large room but wall space is minimal due to large windows, large fireplace and built-in shelving. Also, the ceilings are just 8', so we felt all white just "opened" the room a bit more.

Agree with the comments above, paint the beams and walls all white. Plus get chandeliers that go with your furniture.

Paint out the beams to match the ceiling. farrow and Ball’s BORROWED LIGHT is a superb ceiling colour, no matter what you have on the walls.
