will that gray clump disintegrate and break off?..it would look better without it (just my opinion)..

Nicholsworth- you have to get right down there, up close and personal, to see it. I’m probably the only one who ever will, just because I’m always inspecting my plants.

If it’s just “scar tissue” as Ken says, I’ll just leave it alone and not worry. Hopefully this KR gets really large eventually and it won’t really show anyway.

I do have some mulch leftover that I can sprinkle on there....

so it's not as obvious as it seems?..I would "sprinkle a little mulch" as you said and hide it..

I disagree with Ken and think that the crown on a big hosta like Krossa Regal should be planted deeper than that, maybe 1" down. If you want to cut off the hard, dead part of the crown, that might encourage new eyes to form there, but it's maybe too late to do that this year. If you don't replant it deeper now, definitely give it some extra mulch cover this winter.

This KR wasn't really planted particularly shallow, although I do try hard not to plant any of them too deep (except montana Aureomarginata - which everyone has said should be a little deeper). This one has either hoisted itself up a bit, or some of the soil and mulch has washed during all of our heavy rains this summer.... or a bit of both. Blue Mouse Ears is continually rising up to sit on top of the soil... a subject of several discussions here on the forum... I just keep spreading a little more mulch around it's crown, and it keeps rising up again.

I stopped and got another bag of enriched topsoil the other day. I'll put a little of that, and some mulch around this plant, and in a few other places where I see a bit of erosion... then we'll just see what KR does in the spring. It has looked good all summer, and hopefully it will come back with vigor next year.
