Mums the word!

It seems like it is mums season, I picked up some at lowes today, a BIG white one w/ all buds no blooms, a couple of little pinks w/ a few blooms and one of those box sets of yellows.

I wants some reds, but they only had big ones w/ out blooms, I would love a box set of the reds.

I had heard that nematodes dont like mums, so I was thinking since I have a bed that has NOTHING in it, I would put in a bunch of mums for fall and winter and then when I dress the bed for spring I could chop and mix the mums into the soil as part of the amendment of the soil. I figured it was better then just throwing mulch on top and waiting 6 months.

They dont have to be, I dont think. I have other ones that have lasted longer than a yr, but I have not tended to them well so they dont look nearly as nice as they used to.

I was wanting to use them as organic treatment to help reduce nematodes (not the big one, if that one is going strong then I would want to keep it going) I had read some where that some gardens use the mums in between food crops, (called a cover crop I believe) I dont have a veggie garden, but I do have a bed that has poor soil and nothing going on, so why not give it a try.

ohh snap, it might be marigolds that I need!! damn. mums and marigolds look about the same to me!!! maybe I'll get lucky and mums will also be a help w/ nematodes!

Increasing organic matter in the soil will help decrease our nematodes since they like sand, not loam. If you mulch them in that will at least add in OM and look pretty until then.

I picked up a box pack of marigolds today, I'll mix them in w/ the mums, the upside I did not buy any orange mums, now I wont need to, the marigolds are orange enough!
