need help with my a/c

My problem is a/c keeps running unless I stop it on the tstat. Tech serviced a/c found no leaks. I replaced tstat but same problem. My unit is a Trane sr16 2ton (3yrs old), home is 1600 sqft, tstat is a Honeywell touch screen. What I noticed is the a/c maintains set temp on my tstat but will not cycle off (even if I set it to 21c ,22c or 23c). Could it be the temperature sensor on the unit? What do you think?

Have you verified that the compressor keeps running, not just the fan? If just the fan, is it set to AUTO rather than ON?

yes both are running, fan is on auto

I know this isn't of much immediate help, but get a new "Tech"!

Or call the Service company you had and ask for someone more experienced. This shouldn't be too hard to diagnose and fix if you are on site.

If you raise the temperature setting on the thermostat do you ever reach a temperature where the AC shuts off?

Buy yourself an small inexpensive temperature gauge to see if it agrees with the thermostat. If possible place the gauge on top of the thermostat.

Yes if I raise the temp of as little as half a degree it cycles off. Its exactly what I do each night when it gets a little cooler outside and then it starts to cycle off and on properly until the next day around 2pm where it stays on again until I change the temp at night again. Keep in mind it is very hot the last 5 days and like I mentioned it does cool but only to the temp I set it too but will not cycle. Weird? The thermostat is brand new I changed it because my previous one was doing the same thing. Also I have the tsat on permeant hold (no schedule).

possibly undersized system...a little add on insulation might help you out...

    IMO

You might be right I think my attic insulation is r24 or r32 I thought about upgrading and probably will later this fall. My house was built in the 60s its a bungalow with r12 in the walls I changed the windows and doors. Thank you so much for your time and expertise you have been very helpful!

A 2 ton AC system for 1600 sq feet could be a little undersized. In the US the indoor design temperature is normally 75F (24C) degrees. That would would be the indoor temperature used for the size calculation. The outdoor design temperature for Ottawa is 83F (28C). You are a few degrees beyond the indoor and outdoor design temperatures.

At the design temperatures, the AC is supposed to run non-stop. Most people don't want to hear their AC run continuously and think something is wrong. Adding insulation will lower the heat load. Even closing drapes on windows facing the south and west will help.

Sorry I made a mistake the house is 1360 sqft and all windows are covered and your right I don't like to hear the a/c run all day but outside temp will be dropping by mid week that will make a big difference. I feel confident that adding attic insulation will make the difference. Thanks again!

Proper attic ventilation will help also. The best ventilation is soffit intakes with baffles up to above the insulation, and a ridge vent at the highest point. If ridge vent isnt going to happen you may need more roof vents if you dont have enough.

But yes, you need more insulation up there also. This will also help with heating in winter. R49 is minimum for your area. Add extra on top of what is there.

Check all ceiling penetrations for sealing purposes (pipes, light fixture boxes, etc). Easiest place to check these is in the attic under the insulation. When I moved to my place, all penetrations were completely unsealed and this is common in a lot of houses. If you have open holes to the attic, your heating and cooling bill is significantly increased.

Do attic work when it is cool outside or you will cook in there.
