Sod planted over Cement deliima

Purchased a house that has recently been re-done. They planted grass but don't think they got rid of some of the cement walkway prior to laying the sod. Looks like the grass cant grow deep enough roots. Any thoughts on what this may be or any solutions!?

Only way to know is to dig up a small piece of the dead area, and see what lies beneath.

It goes down about 2 inches and its just good ol' hard cement. Thinking maybe a hammer drill or something might be an option..

If it were me, I would pull back the sod and Jack hammer the concrete out. Then give it a good till. The soil will be super compacted and you would still have drying out problems.

I would want to know for sure what it was before I jackhammered it.
