Where to put handles and/or knobs

I finally selected cabinet hardware, for my newly remodeled kitchen, but can't decide on where to put handles, and where to put knobs, if at all. Also, whether to mount on the top or center of drawers and cabinets. The center looks better, but it's easier to reach the lower drawers if handles are mounted at the top . However, handles mounted on top, just under the countertop, leave less room for hands to grasp. My style is loosely California Coastal. Backsplash and handles (brushed nickel) are a little modern. I need to order yesterday, but I need an exact count and am having trouble deciding. I would really appreciate your help.. Thanks!

Center the handles in the top drawers.

Put the knobs on the door rail in line with the drawer handles on lower cabinet doors.

On the lower, deeper drawers, put the handles the same distance down as your top drawers...this will help you from having to reach too low to open the lower drawers. A template helps.

I would have your contractor install these. You don't want to mess up the drill holes.

The contractor will put them where I want them, that is the question. I keep second guessing my decisions. Some people have said all knobs on top, all handles on bottom, regardless of whether they are drawers or cabinets. I have also heard the exact opposite. I would love an "accepted standard in the industry", or a "rule of thumb" folks agree on.

There isn't really a right or wrong answer. Just as long as you're consistent and do what works for you.

I suggest taking blue tape and mocking up different arrangements. There's no right answer, just what appeals to you, so move them around in different ways and see which seems right! Same with pantry cabinets. My contractor asked, which I'm glad of, because my notion was radically different from his (function over almighty symmetry)...

I'm not commenting on the knobs, but your blue island is fabulous!

Thanks for the great idea, acm! I will try the tape mock-up. Thanks, Mari. I know my knobs are "different", but fun! It's ok to hate them. I'm a crazy Californian. Wait til you see the chandeliers for entry and dining room. Stay tuned. Thanks again! Sherylinoc

On your drawers go in the middle, as you did mention putting the door knobs up high, yes good for you but not a shorter person that later will buy your home.

Sherylinoc I love the knobs too, I just meant that I wasn't commenting on their placement. I love seeing blue in kitchens and that particular blue of your island is amazing.

Thank you so much, Mari. The paint is SW Silken Peacock. I love the name as much as the color!

mmilos, The link you sent was excellent! I love that they explained each style, with photos, and gave instructions. I'm still undecided, but better informed. Thanks again, Sheryl
