Hello, Yes.. it seems that the rule is.. there are no rules. We usually suggest that you place your fixture how your table will most often be. It may seem small when you have a large gathering; but it will work best for everyday use.

Also, the other thing about rules is.. they are just guidelines... The whole space, ceiling height..placement in room.. other furnishings should all be taken into to get the right size for the room, not just the table.

Chandelier: half the size of the dining table (no leaves in when measuring).

Install hang about 32-34” off dining table top.

If you have a rectangular table you can choose different shapes although I think its nicer to choose a rectangular.

For a round table I recommend a round chandelier.

Measure only the leaves that are typically there.

Hi JudyG Designs - the table is rectangular, classic straight leg style. I am inheriting the dining room set hence the reason for my question. The size is actually relatively small without leaves. 40"w x 60" long. I am thinking of adding one 18" leave (is it leaf or leave I never know :-) ) to balance out the room. Hope fully that won't make too much difference in choosing the fixture.

Half of 60”…that is a good size chandelier.

Here is a photo of table and two chandeliers. The info provided says the table is 10’ long and the lights are around 6’ apart. I like the look, for sure, but how would the table look in your room with all the leaves in the table?

Dining room in my previous home, I kept the leaves in the table. I liked the size. If I had fewer guests for dinner, I just pulled the extra chairs away. It was fine.

Is it half the width or length of a rectangle table/? My new table is 45 by 81. With leave 101. I have a 8ft ceiling.

Here is the dining room with the new table and one leaf which I will probably leave in permanently. I found a couple of possible fixtures today but I think i would need to order a different size as the rectangular ones looked too large.
