Except scene shown is a forest-like effect rather than spaced out individual specimen trees in a conventional developed landscape.

Try maintaining an organic mulch beneath the tree and see if this results in any appealing native forest plants establishing themselves beneath it. Also look around in the vicinity to see if there is anything you like growing on its own beneath other red maples, demonstrating thereby an ability to do so. As mentioned previously it is typical for conditions beneath large-growing maple species to be tough.

I have a large old silver maple (25 yrs) where I've tried to garden beneath the canopy. Hellebores and epimediums are colonizing happily. Unhappy plants in the same bed are hostas, brunnera, huechera and various ferns. I do not water this bed. Moral of my story is to search for plants that like dry shade (aka gardengal's comment.)

Tulip trees, Liriodendron tulipifera, have a very distinct indentation at the apex of the leaf, not a pointed lobe, as do all maples.

It is a native species with the largest natural range of any native tree - it would be expected to be present in many forested areas. It may be that other species are in decline for various reasons.....oak wilt, elm disease, birch borers, etc.......so the maples are are becoming more populous.

ETA: it is the Norway maples that are posing an invasive threat.
