Crimson Queen Groot Care

last modified: 8 years ago

I have a beautiful established Crimson Queen Laceleaf Maple in my back yard. This spring I discovered that it had a little Groot about 3 ft away. I replanted my baby Groot into its own pot and put it closer to the house here I could care for it and keep the landscaper guys from accidentally plowing it under. It has done fine all year, but didn't grow much though (CQLMs are notoriously slow growers). I am now wondering what to do with it and how to care for it over winter? I have it in a place that has strong southern exposure and is the warmest part of my garden in the winter, plus it is projected on two sides from wind and weather by a 4ft deck wall. Should I mulch it up around the base of its TINY little stem or will that just invite rot? Should I cover it with a burlap tent to protect it from snow or does it even need that? Any care advice for my little Groot?
