Without being able to see the photo, I'm just guessing. The flower I see on our property that matches your description is Standing Cypress, which is Ipomopsis rubra. Here's some info on it, in case it matches what you're seeing:

Thanks for your time once again Dawn, and sorry for the confusing post. Now I can't even find a way to edit that original post now.

The pic (if you click on the link) IS the actual flower I saw on the roadside. There's a zoom button up in the corner that helps some.

I'm still thinking I've seen these somewhere on the farm before, but can't place it. That standing cypress is close, and also familiar, but seems a little different. As you can tell in the photo, this flower is something that popped up pretty quickly, as the grass had been mowed recently.

I guess I should just be glad to see a pretty flower, without having to conquer labeling it.

Unbelievable. I finally found it by googling something like "red wildflower spines". Probably about my 50th google guess.

Anyway, one picture stuck out and I ended up with Lycoris aka Spider Lily. It says it blooms in late summer after the other foilage has died away leaving a naked appearance. I also read these are sometimes called surprise lilies because they bloom quickly after a heavy rain. This was near a ditch where it would have been very wet recently. Apparently very popular near old cemeteries. I probably have spotted these near some old house sites just off our property.

FYI--Photobucket and Houzz no longer work together, which is a problem I first saw being mention at various places here on GW a month or two ago. So, when I try to see your Photobucket image, I have to wait forever only to get a message that you need to update your photobucket account or something. I know from what I've read, though, that it isn't you---it is a problem between Photobucket and Houzz.

Spider lilies are so pretty. We had native/wild white ones growing alongside forested creek banks in Texas. I've never seen them here in southcentral OK, but I think we are too dry down here for them most years.

The lycoris which bloom in August/September after the foliage has died back also are known both as 'surprise lilies' and 'naked ladies'.

I'm going to try to get some bulbs. Is it OK to plant them in the fall, or should that be spring, or doesn't matter? A shame to let something so interesting fall by the wayside.

Dorothy, we're in the same weather pattern--I just checked Mesonet--you may even be dryer than we are right now! Crazy, isn't it?
