With all the gorgeous wood, I would not compete and add a bold pattern. I would suggest lightening it up and using a neutral palate for the rug. Perhaps a light neutral pattern.

The room is overwhelmingly heavy from all the wood. I'd go light.

You NEED a rug to turn the space into a “room”. That will give you plenty of choice whether you go bright or neutral.

HI -- I would say a neutral textured rug but ... you could do the trial and error by getting some rugs you like and trying to see how it looks . You can do this with making an arrangement with a carpet store or getting rugs from a store with a good return policy. I don't see what you see about the room looking too red . The room looks warm and welcoming . Try some pillows with those colors or with some ethnic covers to balance the colors . One thing I do notice is I can hardly see the object on the fireplace . Maybe mounting a colored board or panel or a blank canvas to back the object to bring more notice to it. But great job so far ... it is a nice room.

The coffee table is just what we have in mind! Thanks for the advice on the piece on top of the fireplace. We tried a million things there and everything looks a bit funny. I finally settled on this brass piece for lack of options but if you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them!
I'm still not sure about the rug, I think I'm going to West Elm and like you said, try it because I can return it if I don't like it.

You have nice windows....the one next to the fireplace shows your shrub looks kind of overgrown...maybe prune it back so some more light can come in?

A jute rug will really help to define the seating area and furniture like grover showed. You're seeing red because there is no definition. Looks like you could bring the side chair and possibly another chair into the area. And maybe do some kind of console on the wall we can't see. Can you post a pic of that wall please?

Wow, I just showed all these ideas to my partner and were so glad we asked for suggestions here. I love the second painting and it seems the jute rug is winning so far, although I personally love the print.
My favorite so far has been the basset hound though. :D

Someone mentioned cutting the shrub on the window by the fireplace. That is actually the neighbor's tree, the living room is on the second floor. Just outside the living room is our deck. Unfortunately we can't really do much there to allow more light in.

I love your place! I like the look of jute rugs but not the function. Uncomfortable to sit/kneel/walk on, A world of dirt sift and stays underneath, and kitty will have a field day clawing at it. At the very least lay a cream hide rug on top of it, but consider a deep pile Flokati wool rug instead? Definitely a low rectangular pillow on the red chair that contrasts and adds color. I saw something the other day that said when a couple disagrees on color versus neutrals, you make the cornerstones of the room (rug, sofa, art, walls) and use throws and pillows for color. You are halfway there. I personally think Wood is balanced best with color, not with whites. Rug:

No doubt I'm going to be pilloried for this suggestion...but have you considered painting the walls white? Beautiful floors, ceiling, but just too much of a good thing IMO

I like the idea of a natural fiber rug for your space since you have all that beautiful wood everywhere. Trying different ones out to see what you like and feels best in the room is a good plan. Definitely go light though, don't lose sight of the fact that you need contrast with your furniture, and it would be nice to brighten up the space a little. The best size rug will be one large enough that at least both the couch and the chair can have their front legs (about a third of the way) on it. You can use blue painters tape on the floor to mark out about where you think the rug should be, and then measure that to know what size rug to look for.

You didn't ask about this, but you've seemed open to other suggestions, so here goes... do you really need the sheers on the windows? If not, I would remove them. Even being sheer they are still blocking some light. If you do need some light control or privacy, maybe you could update your window treatments with casual Roman blinds in a sheer linen. Thise can be opened all the way for maximum light when you don't need it.

And I wanted to note, that if the branches of the neighbor's tree are extending out onto your property, I believe you have the right to trim some of those limbs back if it won't harm the tree, especially if there is risk of damaging something below if they were to fall during a windstorm. Maybe those rights vary state to state, I'm not sure. I do believe in trying to keep neighbor relationships as friendly as possible though, so right or not, I would talk with them about it. Maybe the two of you could split the cost of an arborist to determine which branches are most likely to fall and to trim them. If you like it just as it is though, never mind! It's definitely nice to feel like you're living in a tree house too. :-)

I personally love having tree branches across my windows. They filter a natural green happy light into the room, birds are visible at Eye level and you get free privacy protection. :)

I'm just reading the ideas, and so far, I like neutral rug, art with plenty of blue and white over the fireplace, and branches/leaves intact. And I do truly love the room. It makes "dark" look good.

On painting it white- we thought about it, landlord said no.
Tree trimming- I actually like the tree house feel!
Curtains- they actually lean towards the sheer and don't block the light. We need to filter it because we get plenty of morning sun (photos were taken in the afternoon).
Totally on board with the artwork with lots of blue and white.
