Looks like fleabane

The flower does look a lot like fleabane, but fleabane doesn't grow from a big central stalk like that. I'd agree that it's most likely something in the aster family or maybe false aster.

Here is another picture. I looked up false aster. Looks similar.

Someone on facebook identified it as Rice button aster (Symphyotrichum dumosum).

Yes, seeing your second photo I'd go along with that, and it is the most common native aster up your way, I think.
