Not sure which direction you are talking about.... here are a couple of photos that I think might show what you mean:

The floating shelves - if secured properly to studs should not need to be against the cabinet ( if you are looking at something like picture 2 ) . There is a bracket system similar to this:

We ended up butting the shelves to the full cabinets so that they got 2 points of contact. its been 4 years with no sagging, The shelf on the left has plates and the one on the right cast iron pots so we definitely use them. I think it really make the space feel open.
