Trestle, Double Pedestal or Legs for Rectangular Table

We are planning to buy a 42x72 table for our casual family dining area from Saloom New England. I love their Cheshire bench and had originally planned to buy the matching trestle table, but I'm worried I won't be able to have two adults sitting at either end of the table with the trestle. So now I'm also considering a double pedestal or four-legged table.

I'd appreciate feedback from those who have a trestle table on whether you can comfortably sit in a chair at the end or if you're banging your knees. Also feedback on legs vs. pedestal appreciated!

Generally 24" per seat is recommended so 42" wide doesn't seat 2 at the ends and with legs definitely not.

I've had all and would stay away from the legs on the ends as the legs will defiantly not give you flexibility for putting extra chairs around the table. I'd recommend staying away from a bench as it is difficult to get in and out of, move it up to the table (depending on a size of a person each will sit differently from the edge of the table), and it isn't very comfortable to sit on a bench for a long period of time. Think of a picnic table bench compared to a chair with a back..

If you go to small folding chairs on the ends when entertaining, I found that they work ok for putting 2 people on the ends. Before you buy, if you have 2 folding chairs put them side by side and see how comfortable you would be with a 42" W table.

Sorry, I meant enough depth for one person to sit comfortably at each end...not two chairs at each end. Worried about knees banging on the trestle end.

A friend has a trestle table and the people on the ends can't get too close to the table. My table has 4 parson style legs and works fine. It's 82" and can seat 6-8. If you really like the pedestal or trestle, inquire about the distance from the base to edge of the table. Good luck!
