I apologize, as I know this is not what you're asking for advice on; but, those cabinets are gorgeous! I wouldn't paint them. Seems the kitchen could be nicely refreshed with just new counters and backsplash.

I'm unsure about the overhang question on the island, but at the least, you could update it by changing the shape of the countertop there. Maybe a subtle, more simple curve, and less ornate brackets.

I agree with auntthelma. About the only thing I would change is the style of the cut of the overhang. Good luck on the remodel!

We are currently in the process of researching our kitchen renovation. Like you, we are planning on keeping the cabinets, replacing the floors, countertops and backsplash. Our island is too small, so we are replacing the island for a larger one. Our cabinets are a warm cherry and the island will be a dark stained cherry. So far, the prices coming in for a new island are about $3,000. Would completely replacing your island be an option?

I like your kitchen lay-out. I make the island like this pic. You don't need corbels if you use L-brackets. For backsplash consider tiling up to the cabinet tops behind the stove this time.

gm has a point. Save money. Keep the cabinets. Just do the counter and backsplash.

I would consider having a new island designed. I am not sure what adding 5" of granite would do other than make it look awkward. You may be able to salvage the large drawer base and sub it for cabinets on the perimeter. Drawer bases are awesome! Adding 5" on either side will cut down on the walk space, which at minimum should be 36". A new island will look great and I would save the corbels. Good luck on your project, you have a great starting point.

Suzy, I really like that island and think it would look much better than adding legs or the super ornate corbels. It does look much nicer with the tile all the way up but where would I end it in my case? FYI, I am getting a price for adding something (blanking on name but it's a plain piece of wood, or I would do a small cabinet with glass door and a light for decoration) above cabinets to make them go all the way to the ceiling.

Just to keep things messy, I'd either paint the cabinets and keep the counters, or leave the cabinets as is and replace the counters. Both approaches have merits...

I know I have a nice kitchen, it just isn't my taste. I definitely don't want to get all new cabinets because the ones I have are nice quality and I don't mind the way they look. I just don't like the wood look and want them painted. I also don't like the countertops and backsplash. My taste is much more with a modern twist and the kitchen doesn't fit with the design of the rest of my house. :)

Ohhh, don't know how you did that but thank you :). Do you like it? Not to push my luck LOL but can you switch out the countertop to something more simple and lighter and a cool glass backsplash.

I can repaint with Photoshop, but bringing in counter samples and resizing and all the rest... well, I have a day job! :)

I would totally keep your cabinets as is, the wood is gorgeous. As for your island I think what your contractor is describing will look very nice!

I am a white kitchen lover, but your cabinets are really nice. I even like the backsplash with them. I even think that backsplash looks good with the cabinets painted white. If it were me I would just change the countertops.
