Sofa style and opinions please

Would you consider this sofa modern, or transitional?

How about this one? Traditional, modern, or transitional?

Which of the two do you believe will look dated sooner? Which would belong in a classically styled, transitional home with many traditional elements?

Thanks for any thoughts.

PS: Getting TWO of these to face each other by a fireplace, in case that impacts your opinion. :)

Thought I would a bit more detail: These would be going in a room painted with a very light peach color, white accents (white fireplace mantel and builtins), and dark cherry floors. Rug and the rest of furniture hasn't been selected yet.

Edited to add room dimensions: 17 feet by 26 feet. So "overwhelming" the room in any way isn't a concern.

Thanks lisaam! How would you classify the first one? Would you say it's transitional, traditional... what? Been trying to figure it out and I don't know if it's classic at all.

I do love Chesterfields and already have one in leather (another room). I wanted to mix it up for this room as opposed to Chesterfields all over the house... but I do agree that they're beautiful and classic. :)

I don't think the first couch has a true style, it's a bit of a mishmash. Neo Victorian Hollywood glam?

IMHO it doesn't matter what the label is - sort of like splitting hairs. They are both not modern nor contemporary nor transitional. They are traditional with a modern twist?

My concern is putting them in a room with light peach colored walls. I don't see any connection between the wall color and a navy velvet sofa nor white trim and white fireplace and white built ins and dark cherry floors.

There will be too much disconcerting contrast and this will not be pleasing and at best will just look dated.

What are you trying to achieve in this room? I would encourage you to browse images on HOUZZ and other sites and find rooms which make you have a strong, positive gut reaction.

    Best.

Thanks for this comment, visualizemaven. Made me reconsider this entire thing... you're absolutely right! I've been staring at sofas for over 3 weeks straight and sort of forgot about harmony, it's been an exhausting adventure.

Here's how we landed here: We painted the room a light peachy tone, SW Nearly Peach, this color...

... because we loved the color and how it looks with our cherry floors and white accents. We LOVE the room!

Then when it came to furnishing it, we felt it needed some color, so we initially turned to pale/icy blues and pale greens, which we quickly realized wouldn't hold up in our 3-dog household.

From there, we naturally gravitated toward the darker shades of the colors we already selected, not thinking twice that they may not go in the room in their darker shades.

I've poured over images on Houzz, over and over. I'd love any advice you can give about the sofa colors you would consider in our situation (again, there would be two of them over a rug we have yet to select, but there will be a LOT of whatever color these sofas end up being).

Thanks again for your time and valuable perspective. :)

Hello. Two of these sofas look very good and modern, but if I chose from these two, then I would choose the second option.

The first sofa is almost Victorian in style, so that would be considered traditional. The second (Chesterfield) is also traditional, but paired with more modern chairs, accessories, etc., would lend itself to being transitional. The complementary color to blue is orange, so a peach-colored paint would work. I would bring in some darker "Peachy" colored accessories (coral, for instance). Fabrics like these for pillows:

This is a very reassuring post, thank you Nancy Walton! I did think blues work well with oranges, I just wasn't sure if light peach and such dark navy would work... but I can see how adding darker peaches, maybe with lighter blues would tie it all in.

Was already telling my husband this morning that we may end up having to go with some plain beige or cream sofas and just scotchguard them, then add colorful pillows and maybe a pale blue rug to set the sofas over. But I do like this idea as well!

I decided to do a quick mock up for both looks. Obviously just an idea, but these are all the colors - actual floor, wall, built ins colors (mantel looks exactly like that as well). Sofas would be facing each other and there would be some type of a coffee table in between, along with decorations and so forth.

Any opinions or new ideas welcome; thanks again! :)

The second one, would be our choice. Here is a design of ours for you to see some blue sofas in a very lovely setting.

Thanks very much for your feedback, Lumar Interiors! Your work is beautiful, definitely reassuring that navy can be a neutral. :)

Thank you for your kind and generous response Angie -

I also think staying more neutral with the big/expensive pieces and then mixing it up with accent colors is the way to go.

Have you considered a lighter or medium gray in a resilient fabric (scotch-guard as well) for the sofas? I think that color scheme would be very pleasing and bring your room into 2017!

Then you could always switch out the area rug and the pillows if they get too worn out -

You could pick a rug and pillows with grays, peach, creams, blues - the sky is the limit - just be very aware of what style you prefer - what vibe you want your room to have. Same with the artwork and accessories.

    Keep us posted!

    Best.

I'm not usually a fan of grays, but I do think that they may work well in the room now that I've considered it! Here are a couple of gray options...

    Black and white....

    Some color...

I think I may start a poll with these; curious to see which appeal to most people). Thank you very much for your ideas, visualizemaven; these aren't things I would have thought of on my own. :)

Your welcome sweetie- and I mean that literally!

Your mock ups are awesome - great job! Since you are not a fan of grays, but are able to entertain the idea of gray working well with the color on the walls and the white trim and the cherry floors............well then, I think it is the way to go.

I'm voting for your 2nd design scheme but would find pillows that are not solid but have several colors in them to help tie everything together.

    Best,
