I would start with a rug and artwork. Go on Pinterest, they have tons of ideas!

You already have a very lovely room, Jennifer. What will really set it off will be a decorated breakfast tray on the ottoman and some paintings (or one large painting) behind the couch.

A cream rug with hints of blue in the pattern will bring in extra elegance too.

Rich blues, with the brown and either a hint of yellow or chartreuse green. For above the sofa, I think four prints running horizontal would look nice. With the prints above the sofa, it will give the illusion of a higher ceiling.

I like that first picture in your idea book under living rooms, and would try to copy it as much as possible(the coffee table, the sofa table behind the sofa, etc).

Possibly replacing some of the pillows for some blue ones would help give you those hints you are looking for.

Something like this would look pretty above your sofa. I would have them framed with a white mat and hang them side by side (great sale going on at Fulcrumgallery.com). 50 percent off everything. I think you are wanting to keep the ottoman. I'd suggest a gold tray (perhaps with a mirror bottom for sparkle). Then, a small vase of white roses on the tray. Then, a book you'd like to read on the tray to cozy it up with a tea light candle on top of the book(s). This art is available at fulcrumgallery.com at great prices.

I think you need to paint the room a soft white. The grey is the only grey in the room and looks off. The room could be painted in a day with a gallon of paint.

Then long curtains in a textured white/cream to blend with the paint.

I would also consider doing an aerial photograph pic above the sofa.....they can be pretty edgy! Maybe IKEA has a print of that genre but they are pretty popular right now....something to think about.

Then use the photo as you design guide for color; the two most dominant colors could be used for accent colors in your room.

A long console for the TV placement opposite the sofa will work, and another smaller easy chair in an accent color.

To achieve a farmhouse look try something like this above the couch.

It looks like you have space near the bay window for a "chaise lounge"

I would get something non-upholstered in there—the ottoman-as-coffee-table, particularly when it is in a small room and matches (brown leather) turns many rooms into a marshmallow convention.

I’d also reconsider that recliner.

Beyond that, get some colour happening. Neutral goes with everything but people forget to get the everything that it goes with, sending the room to sleep. Almost any colour would be a hit. Blue, green, you name it. And some pattern in pillows, to give some energy.

I’m not crazy about rug-on-broadloom, as others have suggested. If it’s in reach I’d suggest hardwood flooring, or dark stone (slate), even if it has to wait a few years as you save up.

We just painted the room (it was a deep gold) and not a good color. We went with Revere Pewter but do think the gray is coming out.

I agree with adding some color. It needs it! I think there's so many options.... which is the problem! I also can't find a picture that I like at all. If I can find something i like, I can build from there.

Would you consider a neutral linen looking slip cover over the couch to achieve that farmhouse look? I think it would soften things. Lovely room.

I've never had ant luck with slip covers. Any good brands or suggestions?

I like more simple art. I like the ones from Pottery Barn shown. Or something with simple flower and a bright color. Hard to find in a large format .... that doesn't cost a fortune!

I would get either a mirror or some artwork on the wall, a shelf in the corner or on the short wall, and a rug under the coffee table. you could try some plants to liven up the space as well, there are some really neat planters I've seen that attach to the wall

Decided against the chair and moved it back upstairs. Found this gem and think it works! I know.... I desperately need art work! Still on the hunt.

We needed a large art piece, but didn't want to spend a lot of money. I found this old screen door frame in my parents' garage (we call it "the warehouse"...). I dry-brushed a little chalk paint on it, then used it to "frame" our frames. I also used some vinyl decals, which are simple to use and can be changed out if your style changes. I cut several decals apart and made my own phrases.

That chair is a lot better!

I have to get new windows..... then we'll get the romans!!! For now these need to do. Would love to somehow add panels but I don't think they will fit.

How about this arrangement above the sofa? Four prints lined up horizontally. Then, on the cheap, you can select beautiful wallpaper samples to frame as art. Amazon.com has a set of four matted frames 16 x 16 for 12 x 12 in art. The last photo is wallpaper framed. You can select colors, patterns, floral, whatever!

You mentioned new windows - how about incorporating a window seat in? it looks like a beautiful sun-filled space and one or two little armchairs isn't doing it justice. To me there's nothing better than a cosy warm window nook.
