My First Show & Sale!!!

This past Saturday was the Ann Arbor (Michigan) AV Show & Sale at the Matthai Gardens. I have gone to the last 2 spring shows as a paying customer, but this time I got to participate and work at it on behalf of our AV group!!! Wayne Washtenaw African Violet Club (that I belong to) and the Town & Country African Violet Club. (They are much farther away or I would be going to their meetings also! lol)

Oh don't worry,,,I was STILL a paying customer for this sale also! lol The violets, gesneriads and everything else displayed for sale were absolutely beautiful!!! And the leaves and the mini's and the chimeras and everything! Lots of Russian varieties, trailers, and geeze,,,just lots of stuff!!!! Good thing I saved up a bunch of money!

And I love my WWAV group of people. They are so nice! And I met the members of the other group and I love them just as much! I am still the new kid and they made me feel as though I was adopted into one big happy family! And that I fit in !!!! It just felt good to be surrounded by people I could talk "violets" to! I can't wait until the spring show!!!!

There is a downside to all of this though. Now I am running out of windows! roflmbo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rosie

How wonderful, Rosie!! I know the feeling as I attended the Ohio State AV show last month and stayed two nights. Its great to meet and talk with so many violet lovers; some came from the eastern states and even Canada! It was so much fun!!

Thank you both,,,,Yes I am still reflecting on the experience! Just a great adventure! I am already anticipating the next Show and Sale in the spring! That is only 5 months away! I am a little sad though. We are having our last meeting of the year this month and no meetings in Nov or Dec. It is going to be a looooong time until January, darn. I will miss my meetings greatly.

Terri I still remember how nice it was to meet up with you and your husband, Anne and Judy last spring. How much fun was that???!!!! Think you can make it again some time????

Irina, I wish you could come sometime, it would be wonderful to meet you! Who knows,,,,it could happen!

OH and guess what??? 3 customers came from Monroe (MI) where I live! Two of them live not far from me!!!!! WOW how awesome is that? I am the only person in my AV Club that is from Monroe County.

And my friend Julie came! Hi Julie!!!!! She also belongs to this forum. We had a little time to chat! She is from the Ann Arbor area I believe so she is closer to the sale. She got some beautiful Chimera!

Both Clubs had beautiful looking plants for sale. Full of blooms and looking great!!! And so very reasonable! I wish I could have bought more but,,,,,as Irina says,,,,,,,Real Estate!!!! lol (and you thought I wasn't listening!) And believe me I am running out of real estate! But no matter what, never fear,,,,I will always make room for more! hahahahaha Rosie

So Rosie, when do we get pictures of the new kids (the ones with petals I mean)? or did i miss them?

Ohhhh darn! I was hoping no one would notice there were no pix! I spent all day yesterday carefully planting my purchased leaves and (of course) taking leaves off of the actual plants I bought!

But,,,,ok, I will try to take some of the new kids (yes,,,the ones with the petals of course!!!!). Faaaarrrr too old for the other kind!!!! lol Rosie

Quite a drive from Monroe out to AA. Glad you had good weather for the drive. :-)

Thanks Paul!!!! You know, before all of this violet club stuff,,,,I thought so also.

The first spring sale (2016) I was terrified. Ann Arbor seemed so far away. I have no sense of direction but I had onstar and I mapquested it. But when I got off the exit and saw a round a bout, I almost had heart failure! I thought I would have a panic attack! There was no way I could turn around to avoid it, but it was one of the ones where I just had to slide off to the right and not really go onto or into it! Whew I could breathe again. Then I just went a little slower, took a little longer, looking for the right streets.

But now I know the way to the sale it takes no time at all!!!!! Only 35 minutes!!! And afterward we had dinner together and it took me again,,,35 min to get home! Amazing!!! It takes me longer to go downriver to Wyandotte or Southgate than it does Ann Arbor! About 45 minutes!

So really, it isn't that bad! Yay for me!!!! Oh and it takes me about 45 minutes to get to Romulus Library (which you would think that would be closer but it isn't!!!!) for my Violet club meeting!!!! Go figure! Rosie

Except for not being able to chat more,,,wasn't it just soooooo much fun? Me also, I can't wait for next spring!!!! Rosie

Rose, 45 minutes to drive is not far. Some people drive over an hour here in the City to get to work one way. And then another 45 minutes to get home. It;s hard to live so far away, but the homes are less expensive. The cars are not and one has to replace them more often. I guess there are minuses and pluses everywhere.

I am used to driving for the last 30 years about 45min one way just to see my family. No big deal. I guess the point I was trying to make is I thought Ann Arbor was sooooooooooooo far away. I mean, I can't even guess how far I thought it was. And I never had a reason to go there! When I found out I could get to it in only 35 minutes,,,well,,,,my world just got a little bit bigger!!!! Imagine that! The only thing is those darn roundabouts. They give me a panic attack! I am too old for a panic attack behind the wheel! Oh my!!!! Rosie

Speaking of roundabouts, I live next door to Carmel, Indiana, the roundabout capitol of the world. There are over 100 roundabouts within the city limits! You get used to them.

Roundabouts are new to my part of the world too, and I'm still uncomfortable with them. I don't see them as superior to an old fashioned traffic light in busy areas (which is where our city admins seem to think they should be used). Almost impossible to change lanes during heavy traffic...so endless round abouts or exiting where you don't want.

And THAT is why I stay out of heavy city areas like deeper into Ann Arbor! I don't think they are better than a traffic light. Too many things to keep track of to get around it! Dbarron you are right! Rosie

I've had experience with the Carmel Indiana roundabouts.

    My wife hates them ,,,

Speaking of shows...Hey Heather, I thought I remembered you said you were from Arkansas -- if you're anywhere near North Little Rock, there's a 3-day Violet show and sale this weekend. Can't wait to attend another show, though the drive is certainly a factor for me!
