Thank you Linda. I knew it was pyrography. (Tried it once myself. LOL) However I wasn't sure of the age and while I thought it might be pine, wasn't completely sure. Thanks for confirming for me.

pyrography was usually done on pine because it chars so nicely and quickly....look at how neatly the stain is applied missing the flowers...
it's a really great example....all I have are picture frames and a wonderful old

glove box!

According to some period books the preferred material was basswood/linden. It has neutral grain and colors easily and evenly.

But not for as tructural piece....Picture frames, yes or decorative pictures to be framed, but boxes and shelves needed to be stronger.

I looked more carefully and do believe it is as Linda suggested, pine. Thank you. I love it.

cpartist, that stand is absolutely gorgeous! and that style/size would fit perfectly in my house. Wish I could find something similar.

The stand was just a lucky find and I grabbed it. Didn't even bargain with the guy as I recall. LOL.
