Buying for the future makes financial sense, so take his probable adult stature into account. A full size bed may be the option that brings you the best of both function and lower price point? Both beds come in queen size and we have a fairly large room so we would get the queen size whichever way we go.

I would go with whatever style works with your house. What are your plans later down the road for the bed? Years down the road will he take it with him or will they stay at your house? If a queen is the size you want I would get it now - especially if you're considering spending $900 (Stone & Leigh) for a bed frame. I like the look of both beds but prefer the Amish built one. The finish of the Stone & Leigh is just ok to me. I'm over dark finishes though. I like the style of the Amish one better in general, think it looks better suited for a boy, and it will absolutely be better built. And it's cheaper.

You know your kid more than I do, but I raised two boys and I would not buy anything I would be heartbroken to find the words "Mom is a poop head" carved into with a pocket knife or slats broken out during a wrestling match.

Our son had bunk beds. DH built them. He went from crib to college with them. The beds are very nice, but don't say BOY to me.

LOL Lois! My older brother carved "I hate Mom!" into his wardrobe, but at least it was on the inside of the door! I have the same feeling about the furniture in my son's room, though I haven't found any messages carved into it yet ;)

There are some amazing deals on wood beds on my local Craigslist, so I'd definitely look there if I was looking for a traditional wood bed. I tried to convince my husband to buy a beautiful queen sized wood bed for our son's room last year that someone was practically giving away because we rarely use the top bunk of his bunk beds, but lost that battle.

I like the Amish bed much better than the other one. It just looks classic, but then I love Mission style so may be biased.

another vote for patience and craig's list. furniture for children's rooms just isnt something that i needed immediately and show room perfect. happy you if your bank account can do it all at once, mine couldnt.

My husband built my boys beautiful bunk beds with built in drawers that my older son kept until he left for college. At that point the unit was so trashed that we chopped it up for firewood. True story.

For some reason I can't see the Stone and Leigh bed. I like the Amish one very much. And I am inclined toward a full sized bed. My boys will likely all be around 6'4" and while I like the extra length on the queen sized beds, I can't afford to sacrifice the space in the room.

As for asking a child about his preferences- that is not a good idea. Children don't know a great deal about what is suitable for the future- little ones are short on experience. Perhaps you could give your child options, once you have vetted them. But by definition, children don't know what they don't know. Asking a teen what color he would like his room (or duvet cover) is one thing- there are no long term consequences. Asking a child which bed makes the most sense from a financial and style perspective is silly. What basis would the child have for making the decision? His experience?

And since this is a decorating conversation, I will add that as parents we need to be aware of our influence on our children's taste. I am glad that my parents shaped my taste as opposed to Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware. Let your children know why you make the choices you make. Teach them about style and design and workmanship from now. Otherwise your little ones will grow up to be dependent on what people selling them things want them to think.

I have 3 grown children. Bought brand new furniture for the first two (boys). One just took his set to his house for his spare bedroom. Son #2 trashed his so badly he WON'T take it. #3 - girl == bought set used. Great set. She didn't want it when she moved out so I sold it.

The OP gave us a choice of TWO bed styles. I think it's fine (and right) of the OP to ask thier child which of the two bed styles he prefers....

We're not talking about allowing a toddler to redecorate the house here.....

My fault, Penny. I misunderstood you. Yes, of course giving a child a choice between two things you vetted is fine.

Buying the best quality you can afford is usually a good guide. The Amish, solid wood, lifetime warranty, made in America would be my vote. Lots of options in wood species and stains to coordinate with your dresser etc. I would not worry about a queen being too large... kids grow so quickly, I think you would regret buying any other size if you have the space.

I bought my boys beautiful quality twin XL beds. (Queen size wouldn't fit in both bedrooms but I am sure they would have loved them)

They are theirs to take for their first apartment and maybe someday their spare bedrooms. They were 11 and 13 when they got them and they are now 18 and 20. So no nasty carvings lol and still in great shape.

IMO the mattress is more important honestly

My son always had sturdy twin beds as do all 3 grandsons. Boys reach an age for sleepovers where they woukd be uncomfortable sharin a bed with a friend.

I agree with the sleepover issue. I think a trundle bed would be more practical for that reason.

Funny how you ask for an opinion on two beds, tell everyone you are getting a queen and most of the comments are about buying a different size.

The styles are very similar. I'm not sure how old your son is but by the time we got queens for our sons, they had definite ideas about what they liked. If you are buying the queens with the idea that they will take them and start out on their own with them, I would let his preference play a part. The detail across the top off the S&L bed is something some guys would find fussy (is it something you like -- or does he?). Guys are often drawn to black at a certain age -- while the wood Amish beds would be more classic.

My oldest has a full bed frame, but the one my younger son wanted didn't fit in his room with the armoire desk he wanted. He chose the armoire and has just a basic bed frame with framed art over the bed in lieu of a headboard. If he doesn't care, that might be an option that lets him pick later. More likely than not, he's going to love the big mattress most of all. ;)

BTW, you can stick an air mattress under the bed and pull it out for the occasional sleepover -- or a foam mattress. Kids think that is fun too. I had a trundle -- remember it as a pain to make -- more fun as an idea than actual use.

I haven't read all the answers...so this may be redundant. I think both beds are very nice, however, the Stone and Leigh bed looks like it would be much less of a shin banger....the other one has such sharp corners on the footboard, I wouldn't want it even for an adult's room.
