Rugs next to a bed are hazardous. I have had a rug under the bed for 10 years and not a problem. Every house that has wall to wall has rug under the bed

I would prefer a huge rug under the bed. It looks better than a small rug on either side and really brings the room together.

No, not under the bed, I would place it so that the legs of the bed are on top of the area rug's corners, so that the rug stays in place.

I recommend a rug. Rugs make bedrooms cozier versus stepping out onto a cold hardwood floor.

You can do it either way. I tend to think three small rugs around the bed works best for smaller bedrooms and a big rug does better in a large bedroom.

You can go to a real carpet store that deals in wool broadlooms and look for a remnant that can be cut to size with a nice felt pad to match. I did this for two bedrooms and love the result -- much nicer rugs than I thought I could afford since they were remnant prices. Lay out your dimensions with painters tape. Yes,Rugs are essential. It defines the sleeping space and its nice to step out of a bed onto a rug. Try one big rug underneath the bed :)

I personally prefer rugs on either side of the bed. With a proper felt underpad, they are not a slip risk.

I prefer 4x6 area rugs (or a "bed runner" rug) on either side of the bed. Mine are high quality wall-to-wall carpet cut to size with bound edges. They don't slip because of their weight.
A lighter weight area rug next to the bed might need a non-slip mat.
I am enjoying NOT having to vacuum carpet under the bed.

I am torn on whether to do a rug fully under the bed or runners along all three sides. I'm leaning toward the latter due to family allergies and knowing it'll be easier to clean hardwood under the bed than a rug.

I agree that room size matters, but all in all I prefer one big rug under the bed. It will change the warmth and acoustics of the room too and some of us like the bedroom to feel "cozy" versus harder and colder which more exposed wood flooring would do. It is as much about the look as the feel in this case. Your preference in the end is all that matters.

I have large bedrooms with wall to wall carpet and beautiful oriental rugs. (wish I could afford to have hardwood)

There is no way no how I am hiding any part of them under the bed. I place one at the foot of the bed. Same width as the bed or much wider if I place smaller rugs beside the bed.
