Jonathan Green Crabgrass Preventer (For Seeding)

last modified: 9 years ago

Hey Everyone-

I restored a section of my lawn this fall and had decent results but now that it's getting colder I am seeing the patches of crabgrass die in other areas. Next spring I'd love to seed and prevent crabgrass at the same time. Has anyone used Jonathan Green Crabgrass Preventer for new Seeding?

http://www.jonathangreen.com/product/crabgrass-preventer-plus-new-seeding-lawn-fertilizer.html

It seems too good to be true as most people have told me to use a pre-emergent in the spring, then seed in the fall. If I were to go this route I'd have huge patches with nothing all summer.

Here are my before after pics on the worst spots I restored this summer. Not perfect yet, but hoping some milo applications this fall and spring will help thicken it up.

Thanks!

Jesse

    That product is great.

Scotts has a similar product. Scotts Starter Fertilizer Plus Weed Preventer. Same principle: you seed and pre-em at the same time.

I’ve used both and prefer the Scotts product because the active ingredient - mesotrione (aka Tenacity) - will either knock down or control existing weeds in addition to acting as a pre-emergent.

The above Scotts is superior. Siduron is not as good as conventional pre-emergents for crabgrass but will allow seeding. Mesotrione controls so many more undesirables than just crabgrass. Buy the Scotts.

I'm in for a long brutal winter if I am already thinking about spring seeding :(

Thanks for the suggestions. Can't wait to try this in 6 months, lol.

Don't be a Negative Nancy! Looks like you did a good job there! spring seeded grass doesn't usually fare so well in the summer. Hopefully what you seeded this fall will thicken up and you won't need to spring seed.

    Thanks, mishmosh.

I started working on this lawn last fall when I redid the area over by the wood fence. It came in good then the cold hit (central connecticut) and I began noticing all the dying crabgrass near it. This past spring I reseeded those areas and got 50/50 grass vs. annual grass weeds & crabgrass. Some other areas just outside of view in those pictures are mostly crabgrass and are looking pretty rough now. I am getting there and your recommendation will help in the spring. Thanks!

It is hard to get really good weed control if you are constantly seeding--especially spring seeding. What type of seed are you putting down? Any spreading grasses like KBG? It is so much better to seed in fall and then get a good, long-acting pre-emergent in the spring.

Yeah, I am using a blend of ryegrass and KBG. With regular feeding, how far can the KBG's rhizomes spread?

Here is a more honest picture showing some of the problem areas in the backyard. First order of businesses is training the dog to go pee behind the shed this winter. :0

You can see the brown areas where the crabgrass is dying in the middle and over near the playscape. My plan for the spring is a light dethatching, seed, Milo and the Scotts you recommended with the Tenacity.

I like your backyard! You didn't mention a dog! You are sooooo screwed. I have two golden doodles and have penty of dead spots in my backyard but what can you do? At least I have the front lawn to look nice. Good luck!

Lol, Mish. I also have a good size front lawn and that is what 90% of people see, so if the dog cannot be trained, I am not going to sweat the back too much next year. It is a losing battle reseeding after her. My dog is smart though so I am going to put up some temp fencing behind the shed then give her some fresh chicken when she goes where she is supposed to. I think I can get her to catch on. That's the goal before spring anyway!

Here's where I was last fall at this time. I had completely bare areas that I reseeded in September only to figure out that the rest of the lawn was mostly just crabgrass as it got colder! :\ It's bad that we haven't had our first snow in CT and I am already so eager to get started back on this in the spring. I still probably have a few years before I get it where I would like, but looking back on these pictures shows how far I've come already. I am so obsessed, lol..
