My builder uses Houzz Pro to plan the timeline and give detailed estimates and daily updates with photos of progress, and provide invoices at pre-agreed key points in the build. This made the whole experience much more efficient and stress-free.

Need Chair Recommendations

We have our dining room close to completion. We would now like to replace the dining chairs. Price point around $200 per chair. The Mrs. would also like a bench to go under the window. Most benches are too long to use at the end of a table.

Perhaps this is needless to say but, we can't agree on which chairs to get and are looking for suggestions. Thank you!

the third image is a Dania chair type we were looking at but the colors and black chair legs didn't feel like they would go well.

    Update: Most of the new chairs that we liked were priced around $400-500/ea.

    I liked both Helga and Beverly's suggestions so we decided to check out used/old stuff. Found a set of chairs (6) on CL that were made in the 50's or 60's (as was our house). I'll strip these, have them professionally painted (to match the trim), and I'll re-upholster the seats in a nice fabric or vinyl. The completed price should come in well under $1000.

    Painting a gloss or semi-gloss white the right idea? Am I on the right track with this new project? Given that I'm stripping the chairs I could have them stained the same color as the table.

      I love the idea of a bench/window seat as your wife mentioned but I don't like the colored chairs. Since the room is dark; you have dark walls, dark floors and black chairs... what about stripping and painting your existing chairs a glossy white for a contemporary look or antiquing them white for an eclectic/contemporary look... Also consider purchasing a rug to define the space...where do you live? Is it sunny most of the time? Call me at 713 464-0055 if you like my ideas and want more help

      I love that table base.

      How about a different material altogether, as you already have wood and glass. Metal, or wicker/rush? If you go for wood, perhaps painted frames so they don't compete with the natural wood.

      I love the idea of white chairs, especially the 1st and 3rd ones. I love chairs with round or oval backs but I think the ones you are looking at are a bit too fussy.

      We were at pier one and looked at this chair. One of the Dania chairs is "sand" tone. Appeared to have a slight grey tint to it. We were strongly considering it - I just didn't think it would go well with the rest of the room/table.

      Do you think white is the best option?

      We are in Portland, Oregon. The room has the south wall and gets sun (or clouds) all day. (the room appears dark due to the camera exposure - I had +1 ev dialed in and the bright windows were still throwing off the exposure.)

      Shortped. Undecided on the bench. I'm strongly considering building one to match the table. I'm also considering building the bench into the wall. (I had the table made and can get another slab from the same tree - of course that is an expensive option.)

      I would like to see something more classical with your table, as a juxtaposition. Here are two classic midcentury modern chairs: 1) the Fritz Hansen A Chair, and 2) the Wegner Wishbone Chair, either in white or in light birch. And please don't get knock-offs, get the real thing. Actually I prefer white.

      Chairs from Pier one don't hold up, so don't go so cheap.

      Are you planning to have some kind of cabinet or console table under the triptique? if not, then our art (on both walls) is hanging too high. Lower at least 8".

      I would not use "sand" colored chairs... they wont have enough umph. Depending upon your budget, I either like the white button chairs which I presume are from Pier 1 or the Hans Wegner Wishbone chairs in white, even though Wegner would have wanted them to be in the light wood. Besides being an Interior Designer, I am also a Continuing Education Provider, and my latest classes are Modernism, part 1,2 and 3 where I cover Fritz Hansen and Hans Wegner in detail. Do you have room to put a sideboard underneath your art triptique? I would not have both a bench and a sideboard, because it would overcrowd the room.

      Beverly, I completely agree about doing both the Sideboard and the Bench. The dining room is relatively small. We are only planning to use 4 chairs but really don't want to spend $500 per chair.

      I think you made a good choice because your table is so gorgeous it would be hard to find cheaper new chairs that are just as pretty. However, I like both sets of chairs so I'm not much help

      I would recommend something with thinner legs in a contrasting tone to the wood table base. White, chrome, brass, gild, etc would stand out from the wood on the table. good luck!

      Dallasstudent. That chair is absolutely gorgeous! I'm sure we would love those and they would look great! Still somewhat out of the price range we were setting. We bought the house last August and have quite a large list of improvements to make.

      Now3, I've done quite a bit of research since I last posted and I will be completely re-working these chairs. I will take them apart and firm up all the joints. The tone and color of the wood in the chairs is actually quite nice and there is a pleasant patena in the finish. For now we are thinking to leave the finish as is (though that might change).

      We are still undecided on the chair fabric but we live a couple of miles from the largest retail fabric store in the nation https://www.fabricdepot.com/ - so we won't have a problem finding a suitable color/pattern.

      Don't forget to check eBay or Craigslist for fabric. I've found things I could otherwise not afford through both sites.

      The first thing I found on the fabricdepot website was exactly what I would suggest - modern graphic in gray, cream & white. It is called champagne bubbles.

      ianz28 I wouldn't want to cover beautiful wood with paint either. I think keeping the wood will bring a softer, more organic feel to the room. It should go beautifully with the table and the floor. You could bring some pop into the room with artwork and the upholstery fabric. Or you could stay with the more organic feel. I would love to see your results as you move through this project!
