Repaint the ceiling the same color as the strapping.

Now paint the walls the brown you chose for the ceiling.

Hi, you need to paint the ceiling...white. Then decide. After ceiling is painted...then put up samples of backsplash, and paint samples you are considering...but something light, and bright...then post pics, and shades of colors you like.

Paint the ceiling BM In Your Eyes Blue which is a faint blue that mimics the sky. It has the effect of making your eye believe the ceiling is higher if a low ceiling is an issue.

Always white for height! Warmer whites on walls, whiter whites on trims - if you want to open up the room, and make it brighter.
