Slightly looks like Fatsia Japonica. It requires regular water and seeing the brown grass nearby makes me question my ID.

Sun, dry conditions and hints of red combined with what looks to be large maple shaped leaves makes me think of castor bean.

Kentc - it's definitely not a castor bean plant - although it was really interesting to read about them..

Emmarene, it looks like the Fatsia, but yes from a quick online scan that plant prefers regular water and shade, this one likely gets no water (it's on state owned land right at the start of a park entrance) and gets direct sun. I drive by it every weekday on a commute, it always looks great and mostly dark dark green with that hint of red.

Guess I will have to pull over and get better pics!

M ml, what makes you think it is not a castor bean? I think Kentc id'd it. They grow all over especially in disturbed areas and look very similar to that leaf. Most people like the way they look, until you read highly toxic the beans are to all kinds of people/animals!

5birdy and gr_falcon. In all the pictures I saw of the castor bean plant, the leaves were more jagged and the leaves were either lighter or redder. Also, I have never seen the plant in the picture with flowers or fruit beans. In the Fatsia Japonica pics, the leaf shape is closer.

Knowing where it is growing could help identify it. In a dry wild area, it's more likely to be castor bean.
