Do you have a nighttime ritual for closing up the house?

In our house, we do the same dance every night before bed. We know who checks the doors and who turns off the lights. It was never planned, but before you knew it. We had a routine.

Carry the dog to her bed (she's old, blind, and deaf); Check the doors (3), Set the alarm, Turn on the porch light; Straighten up the pillows/throws on sofa; Turn off the inside lights; Brush teeth and collapse in bed.

Organize kitchen, find the cat, lights out, check locks, look outside to street side and back of my home, set alarm clock. Nite nite!

My home is controlled with RTI and LUTRON Homeworks 8-----no matter what light is on, what TV may be on, what music is playing in a room, if a skylight is open, the garage door---we press 2 buttons at the bedside---"ALL OFF"--presto!

Our 1938 house is small and perfect for the two of us. We have an alarm system that I turn on after checking that the doors on the main level, the ones I open and close all day long, are locked.

Wipe down kitchen, put away dishes, etc. Set up for the AM 5 doggie bowls, dry food, blender for my smoothie.

Let doggies go outside for one last romp, poop, etc.

Take a trip 1/4 mile down private road to lock up main front street gate and get mail. Return, then closed gate to the funny farm/house. (usually do this about dusk).

Check all 5 doors and windows to make sure all is locked up.

Put out clothes for AM - clean T-shirt, jeans, socks, underwear.

Double check barns & livestock (usually do that early in the evening while still light outside).

Change into Nightshirt and put laundry into hamper in laundry closet. Take my blood pressure reading for the evening. Turn off lights - get comfy and read for about 10 minutes - if my eyes stay open that long.

I do not set alarm - I automatically get up at first daylight. If not, the doggies wake me. :)

I let the dog out, set my coffee maker, ensure the kitchen is cleaned and dishwasher has run. I then check the back door, check both kids, check the patio door, retrieve the dog whenever he's done doing his business, lock the front door, shut off all remaining lights, then go to bed. Nothing different than any other person.

Husband peers out the front door into the darkness, shuts off the porch light & makes sure the door is locked. I shuffle down the hall calling "Nite, nite" so our 2 cats will get into bed. Brush teeth, wash face, last chance for a call of nature or a bit of romance, a goodnight kiss, and lights out. Cats snuggle in.

Let out dogs, check goats, close garage doors, make sure all 4 dogs have come back inside. My husband at the same time is turning off lights and grabbing glasses of water. I turn on the alarm, grab one of the dogs-the only one who sleeps with us-and on the way back to the bedroom make sure the cats have food. Wash face, teeth, add PJ's snuggle into bed with my kindle and the dog and hubbs!

Dogs have a doggie door, and the cats could care less if I'm alive (well except for the food bowl thing), My husband requires only slightly more attention. He gets a kiss goodnight, but so do my dogs. Everything is always locked, and the alarm is always set. So I just saunter off to the bedroom. I brush my teeth, put lotion on my hands, turn on the fan, and go to sleep.

Follow behind hubby to make sure the front IS locked. Put the pug in his crate..that is IF he has not beat me to it! He loves his his cozy space.
PJs on. Watch tv with two dogs and one cat on my lap. Other cat in her bed. Take one dog out to potty and then take her to bed. Under the covers she goes and I watch tv in my room until Hubby comes to bed. He’s in charge of the other dog and locking up.

Counters get wiped down after I wash my dessert bowl, usually watch one more episode of something short and light, go upstairs, brush teeth, open bedroom window for fresh air, plug in phone, reach for Kindle to read, fall asleep before turning on Kindle. My husband is always up later and handles the final shutting up of the house - rolls up the projector screen and shuts down electronics, lets the dogs out for potty, then herds them upstairs and gets ready for bed. Sometimes he forgets I'm in there (we've only lived together for 5 years, so) and turns on the overhead lights and wakes me up, gets yelled at, and then we go to sleep.

These have all been so entertaining to read!! LOL!! Liked the last line from HouseofGodsmith..... my husband up earlier than me & seems like every light on & shining right into bedroom 'cause he doesn't close bedroom door!! Good thing I'm a "morning person"!!!! Thanks, Houzz, for the good read!!

Check studio front door locked, look out into street before dropping studio front window blind, turn off studio music- North American Indian hz, turn off all plugs along studio walls, turn off studio lights, check all 3 cats are out of studio, shut studio connecting door to living room, pull curtains across living room windows to street , turn off overhead floro lights in living room, leave on himalyan lamp down by wood burner, go into next room, the bedroom, put cellphone onto bedside cabinet, strip off clothes in one easy movement into a heap into the floor, go to bathroom and put on pj's hanging on clothes hooks by shower, go to the toilet, brush teeth, and listen for 3 cats coming in cat door in window above toilet, if no cats, go outside back door into small courtyard of building and call them, they usually come. Go back inside with cats, after watching hedgehog race under shed when outside light came came on. Lock backdoor. Hop into bed and start reading latest book sitting on bedside cabinet. Now cats appear. Smallest goes between my book and the light, kneads my arm and then goes under the blankets, the shy one comes next, hops onto the bed and climbs onto my legs outside the duvet to sleep. The biggest curls up on my ugg boots laying on the floor beside the cane chair holding the weeks clothes. A few more pages of the book and then turn sound off on cellphone. Light out.

the resounding comment lock everything up and some are packin, does anyone remeber when we didnt worry so much??

Oh ya ginabina1. My parents house only had skeleton key locks. They were only locked when we went on vacation. Of course there was only 12 different kinds of skeleton keys made and you could buy a set at the hardware store. Lol. My first house sometimes the doors were locked sometimes not.

@ginabina1: I don't worry, I just do. I remember in the 50s my folks still locked up at night, but then we lived in the 'burbs. My grandmaw & grandpaw always locked up the store and their upstairs living quarters back in the 1910s-40s but then they lived in the city.

No dogs, no cats, and the kids are gone. The old fellow is still working so he goes first and I follow later. Pillows fluffed, throws folded, lights out, and garage doors down. Never worry about doors. Sleep with patio door in bedroom open till it snows then just the window open. Definitely no guns.

when we were kids, the last person to bed had to turn off the lights, let the dog out one last time and check the doors. As the second to the last person went off to bed, he or she would shout "lights, dog, doors!" and whomever was last to bed was stuck with it.

Change the dogs' diapers, give them fresh water and pm snack. We have an in-law suite and that's the dog's quarters. We have 3 Italian Greyhounds. My tiny blind girl has to stay with me. So I make sure she's been to potty and put her in my bed. Make sure the doors are locked then settle in bed with my dog and 2 cats and work on my laptop while watching TV.

My husband got in the habit of doing a "fire check" each night while in the military so one last check of anything that needs to be closed or locked or turned off or on or unplugged will always get done just before bed. There are weapons in each bedroom at night.

Doors locked ..cat in !...reading this ..the sad part is having a gun by the bed ..not something we do in the UK unless you're a criminal !!

First have a nap in the armchair to get up the energy to complete routine. Wake up. Attend to cat- comb, clean eyes, play hide and seek. Attend to bedroom - curtains closed, bed turned down, air on, lamp on. Attend to self - teeth, face, jammies, loo. Moisturise everything. Jump into bed, plug phone into charger and check to see what my favourite YouTubers have uploaded. Pull out earplugs as I fall asleep.

So good to see that my Houzz family shares my love for pets and safety! Starting at the back of the house I lock doors, make sure lights are off. do minimal tidy up and head to the bedroom. The cats have their routine as well. A quick chase through the house, relocating their various toys in the process.

We wipe down kitchen counters, load & turn on dishwasher, and set up coffee maker after dinner. So at bedtime the ritual is--

Put the Brava mop away (which we start each night while cleaning up the kitchen)

    Turn off the gas fireplace

Put away the throw blankets (or at least fold them)

    Fluff sofa pillows

Move any glasses to the sink / toss any trash

Put bolt in the slider if it's going to be a windy night / bring in deck cushions if it's going to rain

    Turn off downstairs lights

    Lock front door

Bring up anything that belongs upstairs (including shoes and dirty kitchen linens since our laundry is upstairs)

Once upstairs, besides the usual jammies/ brush teeth/take medicine / etc stuff --

    Pull the shades down

    Plug in cell phone

    Set alarm

Let the dog out and send him to bed. Fill a glass of water for the bedside, Check our app to make sure doors and garage doors are closed/locked and security system armed. Then hit the " sleep scene" button to turn off the lights. Last thing is turn on our white noise ( usually ocean waves) and go to sleep.
Home automation makes it all easy.

We never lock anything. Never use outdoor lights (unless guests are leaving right then, since our front steps are tricky). Turn off stereo and any other random electrical loads to conserve power (aiming for annual net-zero with our solar-electric system). Turn OFF furnace (it's loud). Close drapes to conserve heat we do have (and protect from neighbor's stupid driveway light). Cat's do their own thing with a free-access door. My sweetie tucks in the fish (turns off their light). Crawl in bed, listen for coyotes and hope the cats are safe, snuggle.

I pray and thank the LORD for His provision for the day. I thank Him for keeping all of us safe, and I kiss the Scottie dog and my husband and hold my husband’s hand until I am asleep. (He goes to bed with the chickens.). The doors are always, always locked, and the house is always well-lit, even at night. The dog stands guard all night, watching out the window for yard varmits. When she sees one, she runs around the bedroom and then runs back to her vantage point at the window. She sleeps all day. The teeth, face, water and toilet are a given.

I shut all the blinds, get dishwasher started, my Daughter sings the Kitty treat song and they get those, my Husband turns off all lights and locks doors, we yell goodnight and hugs, Husband turns off the kitchen light last as to signal to the cats it is time to settle in :)

This time of year, check poinsettias for watering, ensure all candles are out, unplug xmas tree, fluff couch pillows, turn on outside lights, check locks and retire upstairs.

In Los Angeles, I check the doors (regular lock plus a bolt),
check the sliders, turn off the family room lights, close the shades if they were up, set the alarm and get ready for bed. The front entry and driveway lights are solar, so they are already on. There are automatic interior lights in two rooms. Our house has a hard-wired alarm system, not the motion-detector-only system which doesn't include windows (they will arm each door separately if that's what you have). The entry walk and the side yard gate have locks which are always locked. True, bad guys can get over fences, but after that they have to deal with the system. Monitoring the system costs under $400 a year and the police are very responsive.

I am shocked by the lady that gets out her cats midnight snacks lol. Is that a thing?

Lovely to hear your comment Tami, as I live in New Zealand and have been so jaw dropped by all the guns, security and the way animals are looked after in these comments... so different here in NZ... thank goodness : )

Let dogs out for one last "potty", check garage doors, prepare coffee pot and turn out lights.

Give cat medicine, scoop litter boxes, take a shower or bath because I can't sleep without one, brush/floss, take a half dozen pills and inhalers, check nighttime temps on a.c. or heat, turn off big lights, turn on night lights. I have too many things to do before I can get in bed. Sometimes I wish I could be like a cat and just go to bed. I have to read for at least 1 hour before being able to sleep.

Give dog & cat treats & medicines (3 dogs/6 cats). Push dogs to go out one last time (dry them off). Check on Mom again. Blinds closed, locks locked. Scoop litter & sweep up any mess on the floor (there's always a mess) or I'll trip over it during one of my many nightly pee runs. Try to make it into bed before a dog or cat take my spot. Try to read a bit then try to reach over multiple pets & give the spouse a kiss goodnight. We start around 10:30pm & don't get into bed until a little before midnight. Gotta start earlier. LOL.

And switch out wee-wee pads for our elderly pooch who never learned to go "out" (we got her at 12 years old). Did I brush my teeth? I never remember!

Would be interesting to know if the "set alarm" thing is a geographical variable.

I never had an alarm in my 50+ life. Actually, we had it once to prevent our little child from running out (he was a runner ...). And I live in a relatively large city : Toronto

Pour the glass of wine. Lock doors. Drink the glass of wine. Watch Hell's Kitchen reruns. Teeth/face/wash/skin upkeep. Kiss my young, single self good night ;)

It’s a short one. Check to make sure the door to the garage is locked, take my vitamins, brush my teeth.

When I visit my parents, who live in Florida, it makes me smile every night when my mother asks my father if he brought in the cat food. The opossums and raccoons eat it if left out.

@momirian: Some folks tend to sleep in the morning and may miss work or an event or get their kids up for school if they didn't set an alarm. Other have a natural alarm and will always get up in time for what ever is on the agenda. I tend to get up when the sky turns greyish in the morning. My critters all love to eat about sunrise and when the sun is starting to set at night. The only time I set an alarm is if I have to get up at 3am to catch an early morning flight. Even on New Year's Eve, I didn't set the alarm - went to be about 2am and automatically woke at the crack of dawn to feed the critters - then I went back to bed and slept for about 4 more hours. I've never heard nor read that using an alarm is a "geographical" thang.

Yes we have a routine! Since I"ve been injured I can"t and my husband and daughter don"t let me do anything! But my routine is fix my vape, get ice water, give the cat water, make sure the doors are locked! My husband turns off tv, lights, and gets the coffee maker set for morning! We just do it!
