The best time I found is right before it snows. It helps to get good ground contact when it melts.

I assume in Maine the ground freezes a lot sooner so now would be probably better than April.

You want the freeze/ thaw cycle to help get seed, like I said good soil contact but you also don't want the seed to germinate too soon so you need to make sure the temps stay consistent and no long warm spells.
