Re-painting kitchen cabinets - success or not?

Just wondering if anyone's had success re-painting their kitchen cabinets. We're remodeling and the old cabinets have too much wood grain for my taste. Replacing flooring because of hurricane. Was thinking about painting cabinets white so I would have more choices with flooring. We live on the water and I want a lighter vinyl wood plank flooring. Open concept. Dining and living area are all in one room. Southern exposure. Want to keep things light. Thoughts?

I think that white would look beautiful! You already have a white sink and dark hardware, beautiful combination in my eyes.

I love your cabinets, but if you don't then change them. Just make sure you do your research & get a good painter. It will be pricey, but go for someone that knows what they are doing.

I also think they would look great white. There are lots of online tutorials and before/afters of painted cabinets on blogs. Some of the bloggers come back a year later and show how the paint job is holding up, even. You might find good advice by checking some of those out--or hiring professional painters?

I vote for white. Yes, I have painted my old cabinets TWICE over the years I lived in this house until finally getting a new kitchen last year. I used an oil-based paint, and did NOT paint the interior - just not necessary. We did them ourselves - removed pulls but not the doors form the hinges - DH was terrified the screws wouldn't go back in as tightly as before. It was easy doing it this way - just takes time. I think it would really freshen up your kitchen.

Thank you so much for the feedback. My problem is that if I did keep the cabinets the way they are, I feel new flooring options are so limited because there's so much wood grain going on already. Help.

I vote for white cabinets- make sure you add a nice big fruit bowl or a plant (cyclamens in a bright pink or red or purple) for color and you are all good.

I think your cabinets are beautiful, and would be stunning, if painted white.

I had success painting mine (not re-painting - they were stained/varnished knotty pine).

A helluva lot of work though to do it properly - don't go into the project lightly.

No backsplash yet, and ignore the floors - and the island position tape - still a work in progress. I have much angst over the floor. It won't be wood or tile...that's all I know.

If this were my kitchen (and I DO wish it was, it's beautiful) I'd keep the cabinets as is, change the hardware and do a gray coloured floor.

you have beautiful cabinets that go perfectly well with existing countertops and backsplash. If you paint you need to pick a very warm white..like very warm cream. you can do that if you dislike your grain; but has to be a pro job I think; won't be cheap.

I personally love your grain, and would work with the existing stain, which is already pretty light, maybe changing hardware..but of course you should like it not me. Just won't be cheap..or in case you do it yourselves-will be very labor intensive..as mentioned in previous comments.
