I don’t like the mantel at all it is too much for the fireplace so I would replace that and you do know the hearth is the part that sits on the floor , right. A simple thick piec of reclaimed wood would be my choice for the mantel and I would not run it around the corners.

That blue paint is really making it hard for me to judge this fireplace correctly since the cool blue is bringing out all the yellow in that brick and wood.

1- Repaint (nothing in a cool tone)

2- Do something with that brick and stone. It's very yellow and will really limit what you can do to the room.

3- Like Patricia said, that mantel is very large and shouldn't wrap around.

I think your biggest problem is not the wrap around hearth but the three competing stone types. I would completely resurface the fireplace with something similar to the inspiration photo below.

The arched shape of the surround is a large part of making it look "outdated." When you change the stone be sure to also change the shape!

Neutral colors are always the best. I love the mix of cool and warm colors of the ledger stone in the picture that Glo shared. The size of the stone will be too large for your space but try to find something in those tones.

As Raegan Ford Interior Design suggested, I would start simple. I would try a white wash on the brick first like in the pic. If that doesn't appeal, try a regular light/white coat of paint. If that doesn't totally get it, try painting the wall color something different. In other words, go slow and don't do something that will be hard to reverse, i.e. painting the wood. Good luck!

If it's not in the budget to reface the stone and tile, I would paint the same creamy color as the tile and get a piece of furniture grade plywood that you can stain to match your mantel. Add it to the sides of the fireplace and some molding pieces to the front to make it look like a full mantel.
