I'd prefer to see a neutral grasscloth, reupholstered seat cushions in something more bold (you could go chinoiserie here), no chair rail and replace the mirror with two large prints, as the mirror only reflects the staircase. Also, I'd consider two lamps instead of one, and replace the chandelier to something that fits better with the overall theme.

I'd go with the chinoiserie wallpaper.

Personally, I love both. If you do not plan to change the carpet to hardwood and then add a very large patterned & colorful rug, I would do the chinoiserie paper. If you plan to do the floor soon, I would certainly do a plain grasscloth paper.

do you have art? then grasscloth is a good background for it. do you not have art, and dont know what to buy, and think going to homegoods counts as buying art? then do a great chinoiserie paper.

I pr.efer the look of grasscloth. It will free up more options for decorating & you won’t tire of it as fast.

I don't think your buffet would suit chinoiserie wallpaper as much as grasscloth. A nice look is adding molding to the lower half and paper above. Grasscloth will be easier to live with in the long run and can be quite impactful and bold based on the color chosen. If not using molding, I would remove the chair rail for cleaner lines.

Would you please clarify what you mean by "trim out" below the chair rail? Just want to make sure Im clear and thank you for the advice!

I'm with Jan. I wouldn't even waste my time worrying about wallpaper before I got rid of the carpet. Focus on that first.

After you get your Flores done you may want to look for grass cloth or other natural fiber wallpapers that have a pattern printed over them. There are so many beautiful designs and this way you can have your texture and your print at the same time.

By "trim out" I mean add some picture molding boxes, do thet proportionally to the walls. Any trim carpenter can do it for a few hundred bucks. Look online, for many ways to style that : )

I agree with Jan (as I usually do!) The baseboard is way too skimpy for the room, and probably will need some tweaking after the wall to wall carpeting is removed.

After you fix the "bones" then you have a choice--do the pattern on the wallpaper with plain curtains, or the pattern on the curtains with a plain grasscloth paper. Either way is good, but definitely use some pattern and color in the room.

No law says there must even BE a chair rail. If you don't want to trim? Take it away, or paint it the WALL color so it disappears. A room can be beautiful with no chair rail at all.

i'd suggest painting it wall color rather than removing the chair rail. if you remove it you can end up with nail holes and raised paint lines... individually they are easy to repair, but when you have a whole room of them, in a straight line around the room... unless meticulously patched they will announce 'a chair rail was here!' louder than the chair rail ever did!

The wallpaper you are planning on adding will hide any inconsistencies.
