Aromatnaya Quince

I was hoping someone here might have some experience with this tree, I purchased one yesterday and planted it. I've been on to a few websites with conflicting advise.. some say you can eat the fruit fresh right from the tree in late Oct. There was a large quince actually on the tree when i picked it up, my son wanted to try it and he said it smelt like lemon and after struggling to bite into it said it tasted a bit like lemon right before spitting it out. I tried it and it was like biting into a rock. ... Other websites said you have to pick the fruit and let them ripen on a window seal. Does anyone know if the ripening stage is in fact Oct and if they have to actually sit to ripen. I certainly couldn't eat them " fresh " like that right off the tree. Or should i of left it longer?

Thanks so much, this is my first Quince and aside from the fruit it's quite a pretty little thing.
