What would you do with this kitchen?

Hello!

For a budget of $8,000-$10,000 (excluding appliances-those will be all new and don't need to be factored into the budget) what are some things you would do to this kitchen?

Some thoughts:

1.) Bringing the raised part of the island down and expanding it out so it's one level.

2.) New counter tops...just don't know what color (or type) to go with. I have always liked a lighter color (like carrera marble-looking Cesar stone) but think that might be too much white in this kitchen.

3.) Taking out that piece of furniture in the right corner, but not sure what to do with that empty space?

4.) maybe relocating the microwave somewhere (on the island?) and doing a range hood up to the ceiling? Would that look weird because the cabinets don't go that high? Also, I guess that would mean the island would need to be expanded because I don't see where a microwave could go.

Any thoughts on decorating, updating, maybe paining the walls, etc... would be helpful! I also don't know how much these cosmetic type updates would cost so not sure if my points #1-4 above are realistic.

Nice space! I'd start with a cabinet-depth refrigerator and a reworked island. I agree that the cabinet in the corner doesn't seem to belong there. Can you match the existing cabinets and extend them down? If not and you can get new countertops, maybe you can use that space for bookshelves, a wine or coffee station, or a small desk area. Upgraded lighting, hardware and backsplash would really liven the space. Have fun with it.

@rantontoo thanks for the quick response, lots of great ideas. Yes-I think there's enough room to extend the island out. Interesting take on the island becoming a feature...I think that!

For wall color I am thinking the color on these walls (kind of a light gray with maybe a tiny hint of blue):

@einportlandor I will have to figure out if I can extend the cabinets-seems like that would be the best bet. If not, I like your idea of a nice wine rack or something that works with the space!

Any thoughts on the backspash tile? White subway or carerra marble??

Backsplash will be determined by the counters and should be selected after counters are finished. For example, some people really dislike a real marble backsplash against a quartz marble look-alike counter. Others have picked that combo and like it. I think it depends on the two materials being put together.

Since you like blue-gray, you might look at BM Sterling. Depending on light warmth, it can look more grey than blue; but with really cool LEDs, it looks more blue. You are going to have to find a color that works with your floors...I think the blue-greys will work. If you keep the perimeter counters, paint will have to compliment the tones of that grey too.

Bring raised portion of island down with counter height seating area. Paint walls something darker. Like sea salt, revere pewter, gray horse, etc. I'd paint the back of island same color. Get stainless appliances. Do a gray veined countertop, marble/marble look herringbone backsplash.
