Need help with space behind a sofa

I am thinking about rearranging the living room to creat leases dead space between the couch and the television. If I get a sofa and place it where it is in the picture, what do I do with the space behind the couch? It is basically a 12x6 foot space. Any ideas are welcomed

It's actually the other part of the sectional I took apart to see what it might look like. I plan on getting rid of the sectional. I will post more photos later

Here are some more pics of the room

I would put the sofa back towards the wall and add a sofa table behind it. Keep the big picture there but remove all the shelves and candles. Put two lamps on the sofa table with a bowl or something in the middle of them. A coffee table or large ottomon in front of the couch. The sofa blocks the french doors and really cuts the room off the way it is now. Add two occassional chairs side by side or across from each other to have more seating. Put the other part of the sectional in another room or get rid of the entire sectional like you mentioned above and get a couch, two chairs, sofa table, ottomon, maybe an end table for the couch with a lamp on it. Also putting the couch back near the wall would open up the stair space as you entire the living room.

I think the placement of the sofa floating in the room is best because of the way you enter the room .The staircase is also nearby. I would create a sofa, two chairs as the main grouping. I would place a long console table on the back wall to store games etc. I agree with vjs12 about the console table with two lamps.

Vjs thanks so much. I currently have the sectional wrapping around the space where the picture and the shelves are. I didn't like that there was so much dead space between the couch and the tv. That is why I was tossing around the idea of floating the couch in the middle of the room. The first picture below is how the room looked, the second is what I have been thinking about

The first is so much nicer. Fits the space and your sofas. that's not too much space. The room must feel larger. I don't think you have trouble seeing the TV. ? It doesn't work having a chair behind, unless you create another reading area with one or two chairs, a table and lamp and maybe a bookcase on the back wall. A mini library.

If you want to keep your existing furniture, the first picture layout looks great. It opens up the room and defines the space from the stairs, dining room, then family room. If you want to get new furniture, like in the second picture, I would still put the couch toward the wall with the sofa table behind it. Put the chair to the left of the couch with the small table. Put the coffee table in front of the couch. It will open the room. I don't think the tv is too far back in either picture but in the second one the way I suggested, the couch would be a little closer since you will have a sofa table behind it. It might be a great compromise so you feel it is closer to the tv without having it in the center of the room and blocking off the room. (The room is 12' so I'm assuming having the couch in the center of the room would be 6' and tv viewing safely is 10-12'....just a thought). Good luck! Let me know what you decide.

LB and vjs thank you. The room is very awkward. It is 18 feet along the wall with the sliding glass door, 12 feet long in the little alcove. I will let you know what I decide. I have been living with the couch closer to the tv for about a week, and I am not sure how I feel about it yet.

I decided to go back to the original. Thanks for all of the advice!

dooser16, I'm glad you decided on that. I like it the best and it looks very cozy. If you want a different look, add some pillows on the couch like the rust color of the candles and pictures. I love the dog in the picture? Is that a Shitzhu? They are the best dogs.

I'm happy you went back to it!

Vjs yes he is a shitzhu mixed with a poodle and a bichon. I would love to put pillows on the couch but the dog "loves" the pillows as well. Haha. Thanks again
