Reporting Shimpaku Juniper early n dormancy?

Stopped in a local small local bonsai shop and bought a small (10ish inch tall) Shimpaku Juniper, my first of the species. The owner used a mix that contained a good bit of peat moss (peat, turface and sand...I saw a bag of "play sand") I would prefer to get it in a mix that does not contain any peat or very fine sandbox sand ASAP for the winter. Would it be better to spend the winter in peat soil or repot into a peat free soil earlier in dormancy? South Central PA. The tree will stay outside under deck overhang and in unheated garage if/when temps get under 20F.
