Buy some foamcore to try out several shades of navy. Pure white and dark navy are likely to look quite odd with the terracotta roof color. A rich golden color looks good with navy. Look at some colors midway between Wedgwood blue and navy, too.

Thanks so much for your advice apple_pie_order. We've tried a few samples and the results were meh. e.g we tried Behr ultra pure white with starless night (dark grayish navy) on the trim and we weren't too thrilled. The ultra white was too glaring and cold looking. The navy looked ok. So I figured I'd ask for some suggestions before buying more samples. When you say "rich golden color" are you thinking tan/yellowish? or more like a warm white?

Look for a paint with an LRV around 86 to 90.

groveraxle, thank you so very much for doing the 3 comparisons above! This really helps with the visualization. The Colbalt blue trim is my favorite. And no those are not shutters on the left window, juts one viewing pane in the middle and two sliding windows on each side. We actually just got those replaced with wooden windows with the side ones opening outward. That's why we are trying to figure out paint colors now. Any suggestions on the warm whites?

Look at the photos on Houzz, almost all lol white, creamy white, or yellowish white. Bright white is more Island Greek. Haven't found any Navy trim, lot of brown shades.

A creamy warmer white is best on this style of house ( one of my favorites ... I live in So California ). Whichever you choose I’d go a little darker than your initial thought, it always comes out lighter & brighter on a large surface in my experience. I recently used “Tahitian Vanilla” in my house, looking at the paint chip I thought it too dark, however, looks very creamy white in a nice way. Just sample a few warmer whites.

Jan, thanks, yeah I've been looking on Pinterest and Houzz and I've seen so many Spanish house with white exteriors and I'm like, yeah that looks beautiful. Except when I go to look at the paint samples i can't tell which white is on the online houses I like. lo, never knew there were so many whites! Also, we wanted something a bit more unique with the trim hence our thoughts on navy.

K Laurence we live in So California as well! And our street is full of these 1920s-30s cute Spanish style houses. I'm not sure whether they are called "Spanish colonials" or "Spanish Bungalows".

Thanks for the tip that the paint color on the house might look lighter than it doesn't the paint chip. We dismissed anything that wasn't bright coz we don't want a brownish or tan exterior However, based on comments above we'll sample a few warmer whites and see how they look.

In the Photos app of HOUZZ, ask for "exteriors Spanish bungalow" or "Southwestern exteriors". White, bisque, cream, light tan and pale terra cotta will work, but navy on the arched windows may look like three googley eyes.
Then ask for Spanish bungalow landscaping.

Look at good old Navaho White. I'd tile the front stairs and porch with colorful tile and use a color from the tile for trim.

Adorable house- I love the idea of a warm white but I think you need a color pop for your window trim. The navy is too safe. There are many color possibilities. You could also add some styling details to pull the new color in. This may deserve a few hours from a designer. Good luck :)

Good suggestions from everyone. I just wanted to mention that your house would look fabulous with a xeriscape ... leaning Mediterranean , olive tree, agaves , lavender, succulents, things like that. And I love your house too!

Succulents are a great option maybe some bougainvillea. Problem in CA is the water issue and the patrolling of who is watering, adhering to the days and times you can water and and the fines as they watch meters. Planters a great option as mentioned above for dwarf trees, etc.

I grew up in Southern California and my mom still lives there. Large planters might be a great option as mentioned above for dwarf trees such as lemon, etc. Watering in Southern California is a nightmare anymore unfortunately.

It all depends upon your landscaping ( that’s why I suggested xeriscape / Mediterranean) . Mine is drought friendly & I live in a coastal town so it really isn’t an issue, any watering restrictions have been lifted, nevertheless I am cognizant of the fact that there will be periods of drought in the future as well as wetter times. I have container trees & plants but they DO require more water not less, especially terra cotta...

Thanks so much for all the contributions and ideas! And yes, we do plan to do a drought resistant landscaping leaning more mediterranean. Thankfully, no water restrictions currently, but we do want to be water conscious. I appreciate all the suggestions on lavender and succulents, etc.

Porter Edun and suzyq53, great ideas on the tile, thanks. We were definitely planning to incorporate colorful tiles on the front steps as well as the arched doorway to tie in the colors. When we remodel our kitchen (which is the next phase after exterior paint) we plan to incorporate tiles in there as well - not going all crazy but certainly keep the Spanish theme. This is all so exciting especially for first time home buyers :) I wish we had the $$ to do all the stuff we want to do all at once!
