This problem with bringing herbs indoors is that there just isn't enough of the right kind of sun light for them to do well.

Chives tend to be one of the more tolerant varieties of herbs for indoor growing but in general the previous statement holds......indoor conditions are not at all well suited to growing herbs. You can prolong the life of basil temporarily by growing it indoors but it is an annual with a limited lifespan. Most other herbs will grow perfectly well outdoors in a zone 7 and will remain harvestable throughout winter, so you do not need to go without :-))

Chives are winter hardy in the ground. Some I have in pots come back every year. Garlic chives seem hardier than onion chives. Annuals and tropicals like lemon verbena or marjoram must come in, but many herbs are fully winter hardy. I have to bring rosemary in, but rosemary and lavender will probably do fine outside in zone 7.

Yes, the chives have lived for years outdoors here in zone 7 (you in zone 5b-6... our east mountain area or? north up by Santa Fe?) but the tops die back when it freezes so I clip off the top, chop it up & keep it in the refr. to use. The basil I took indoors is alive but will see how long it survives indoors & also being an annual! Rosemary ( tree-like), lavender, sage doing great all winters. Unusual, but this year just here at our house in Albuquerque it is mile high/5280 ft. & no real freeze yet in December: 60's days/ 40's & high 30's nights!!

Yes, unusually warm, but running out tonight to bring in some seedlings from unseated hoop. Teens tonight in east mtns. Daughters in abq , too, freeze damage rare.
