Neglected dining room needs Houzz love

I've had great success redesigning my living room with the help of talented Houzzers and I'm hoping you can help me do the same for my dining room.

The room is small and poses a functional challenge with it being a high-traffic area. We've recently added a new deck so this outside door now gets used a lot. The door hits a chair when open and you have to walk around the table to get to the kitchen or living room. I think I have a solution to this layout issue, but wanted input before making too many changes.

Design-wise I want to make a whole lot of changes!

Changing:

xmas lights/light fixture

table and chairs

removing greek pedestals (stacked in corner)

removing floating shelves

window treatment

paint, if needed

Not changing:

antique chest of drawers

blue storage locker

artwork (need to reposition, but want to keep in room)

Here is a floor plan for the room. All measurements are in inches.

I'll post more photos in the comments. Looking for layout input first, and then the fun stuff!

I'm glad everyone is liking the framing.

I went to a local artist who also offers framing services. He could not understand why I would want a simple white frame with white matting and tried to persuade me to choose a different frame with multiple mats. I didn't waver and he ended up painting a wood frame for me. I went to pick up the piece and was disappointed to see that the frame and the mat were different shades of white. Cue the uncomfortable warm white vs cool white conversation and a parade of new frame suggestions. I again didn't waver and he ended up spraying the mat to match the frame. I was skeptical about how this would look, but it actually looks great! Thanks for verifying that my choices weren't crazy. Supporting small businesses is sometimes hard work.

HIWE: Thanks for the chair suggestion. :)

drdeb: The sad plant on the chest certainly isn't helping it look less... wistful.

You've done a great job taking lots of good advice and creating a really wonderful space. While I love your new table, chairs, light and rug, it is the art that really makes this room special. Well done!

BAM! New quartz top to grandma's chest.

I've grown to like the minimalist look here and don't feel the need for art over the chest. I can't wait for our next party! I'm going to set up the wine bar here.

I'm thinking of changing the chair cushion to something non-white. Any suggestions?

Lovely! I agree to not putting any art over the chest, the high plant gives some height anyway and keeping it bare is rather unexpected. For the cushion, if you must ( ;-) ), perhaps a black and white pattern? Make it a big pattern so it doesn't fight the rug. Or you could do something pink or purple (no pattern)? Actually I would prefer that instead of the black and white, I think.

What about a salmon-y pink like the pillow shown here?

Or do you like the white cushion on the chair?

    last modified: 7 years ago

I like the white cushion, but I don't have to live with it. Re the salmon, does it go with the swimmer's hat? Not that it has to be the same colour (rather not), but it shouldn't clash. I think I would keep the white chair pillow and put a small throw pillow on it for colour if I felt the need.

Now Amoeba, I know you're handy, but how good are you with a sewing machine? If you were, you could make several covers and change them whenever you fancied.

I kinda forgot about this room! It looks amazing. And I’m definitely on board with the less-is-more look. Love the quartz on the chest. Just fantastic altogether.

On the other hand I really have no useful (or useless) opinions to offer on the cushion colour.

(I certainly am familiar with the “crazy houzz” look from family members!!!)

Beautiful Amoeba---great call on the quartz! Love your art and decor.

I like the coral and turquoise colors; or might think about adding a more neutral color with texture (to repeat some of the texture in rug). You could add a contrast or coordinating cord to up the customization and could also up the comfort with a new cushion (more ht).

Example of concept (too big, but you get the idea):

    Have fun hunting!

babophz: Sadly, sewing is not part of my skill set. My mom, however, is very talented. I will see if this is a project that would interest her. I also have a neighbor that I may approach.

Maybe this weekend I'll make a trip to a fabric store (with my jacket, pants, scarf, blanket that you see pictured...) and see if anything strikes my fancy. I have no idea how much fabric to buy and how much the fabric will cost. I guess bringing the cushion along as well would be a good idea.

imhofan: I've looked into replacement cushions and haven't had any luck finding any. The cushion is actually an oval. Does anyone know where I could buy an oval cushion ready-made?

The white cover could be taken off and used as a template for a new cover.

This photo probably shows the shape better.

Re-Upholstery shops would be good resource; or lots of custom cushion/pillow options on Etsy for example. Calico has 30% off sometime soon (just got a mailing). Perhaps the manufacturer of your chair has another option for replacement cover?

If keeping it clean is the main reason for changing the pillow, how about having a cover made from a white that is easy to keep clean? I know Sunbrella works well (we have it over here too), but I'm sure there are other fabrics in the US that could do the job. Flo, HIWE, anyone?

    Amoeba-meba thanked babophz

Sunbrella is one brand of performance fabric, not stain proof but is washable and can bleach. Crypton and others give more stain protection but may not be able to bleach. Be sure you like the feel of sitting on these fabrics. For such a small cushion, maybe get a couple covers made and switch out for season to prolong use and give you some options. Think texture!

    Amoeba-meba thanked imhofan

Keeping the cushion clean isn't the driving force behind changing it. I just think it's too much white all together compared to the rest of the house - and it could be an opportunity to have a different color in what ended up being a mostly blue room.

HIWE: Those are cool pillows, but I don’t think I want an accent pillow on this chair. It’s a small chair and an accent pillow would obscure too much of the cool structure. (This pillow is 21x13.)

Imo a back pillow takes away the beauty of the chair, I'd keep the spindles in sight. There are many v cool geometric fabrics around at the moment, would you be interested in those? Or do you prefer a solid for the cushion?

    Amoeba-meba thanked babophz

Thanks for all the interesting lumbar pillow suggestions! I don't think I want to add a pillow to this chair since it would hide too much of the chair's structure/lines.

babophz: I think the fabric for the cushion could have a subtle pattern, as long as it doesn't fight with the lines of the chair. I haven't had a chance to get to any fabric stores yet.
