Bedroom design advice needed

last modified: 4 years ago

Hello Houzzers! This bedroom has become the repository for hand-me-down furniture and miscellaneous stuff and I can't stand it any more. I've started some plans, but need to bounce ideas off Houzzers before I get too far.

With only one small closet, storage is a big issue here. The room is a good size - roughly 12ft x 15ft.

I've purchased an IKEA PAX wardrobe to place in the bottom left corner to replace the mirror dresser and bookcase and will hire someone to assemble and trim it out to look built in. I found a cool wallpaper to add inside to also help it feel more custom. ((Pictures in comments))

I'll be purging unwanted clothes this weekend and hope to be able to get rid of either the low dresser or the tall dresser or maybe even both. I'm not in love with any of the furniture or window coverings, but can't go too crazy replacing everything. The light fixture is a thing of beauty... not.

I'll add some photos in the comments of the other rooms Houzzers have helped me with over the years. I want to apply the same aesthetic to the bedroom. Thanks in advance for all advice.

    Here is juliab51's mirror suggestion:

What do you think about the mirror? I like it, and the price, though it definitely isn't as cool as the asymmetrical one.

Babo, that ceiling is fabulous! I love the whole room.

I think the julia’s mirror is an excellent alternative for the Amoeba. No, it’s not that cool, but really nice, pretty and affordable.

    drdeb1234, such formality 😀

The colors of the blinds, pillow and rug play nicely with your wood floors.

I am doing a similar thing (replacing free standing pieces with PAX) but haven't gotten to the actual design part yet. We are also redoing the floors so that is driving the timeline. I would love to see what your finished room looks like.

HU: The room isn't finished yet, but this is how the PAX turned out (before painting the frame). I absolutely love it.

That is stunning you'll be glad when you get it all done to a Meijer it all!

Are you having technical issues, Amoeba, or just a lack of time?

    Amoeba-meba thanked babophz

Delayed by work and mounting hardware issues...

    POOF!

    BAM!

The curtains are still a bit wrinkled, but much better than they were last night. I may clip them at the bottom to train them to hang straighter.

I hung them just beyond the reach of the PAX door, so the door can open unobstructed.

You can see from the above photo that i ended up modifying the inside of this PAX by removing some shelves and adding a hanging bar and a pull-out hanger. Ikea took the shelves back with no hassels and now the PAX is perfect for us.

It takes patience to get drapery to hang just right. I know you will get it "perfect"! Looks amazing. Good moves on the tweaks of the wardrobe unit as well. It's a beautiful day!

A really wonderful improvement, Amoeba ! I know you will enjoy your new bedroom for a long time-to-come. You may have mentioned it earlier, but will you please share the color/ brand of white paint you used on everything ? It is all so fresh. Great vision !

    Amoeba-meba thanked niccidhg

niccidhg: The paint I used in the bedroom is Behr White. It was pretty close to the PAX door color. I've also used Benjamin Moore Simply White in many other rooms in my house.

Ah, Amoeba….you are quite the creative problem-solver ( the closet), and the drapes / shades are simply lovely, lovely, lovely…….

Hi Everyone! Yay! I'm not a ghost.

I haven't made any progress on this room in the last 7 months. I had planned to replace the ceiling light fixture and get a fun floor-length mirror, but everything came to a screeching halt when my husband and I started talking about moving to Portugal. At first it was just idle conversation, then progressed to "why not?", and then "if not now, then when?".

    You've been already, right? ;)

Are you by any chance a chiropractor? I know one planning on moving to Portugal.

We visited Portugal in 2019 with another couple. The couple has now sold their house, will retire later this month and make the move to Portugal in January. They have been our inspiration!

We went back to Portugal in September and now plan to rent an AirBNB in Cascais for February and March next year. We're taking baby steps. We'll be living and working there to test the waters. Very excited!

    Nope, not a chiropractor!
