You need some type of backsplash behind a bathroom sink ... the men/boys in my family don't seem to be able to keep water IN a sink!

Either do a 4" backsplash in the same material as the counter or find some tile that you like.

I hope the person giving you the bad advice of leaving it plain/painted isn't you contractor!

I vote for taking the mirror all the way down to the counter. Mirrors are not prone to water damage, and they're easy to clean.

I asked the same thing a few days ago because I don't like the look of the backsplash and don't want one and don't feel I'll need one (I never have water on the sink). A couple people told me to do the backsplash, one said I didn't need to.
