Fall - Colette's Secret Heritage

SECRET - Tracy'92, HT, offspring of 'Pristine' and just as vigorous but more fragrant to my nose, fewer thorns than most. Sort of a mini flush now. Lasts decently when cut.

SECRET when aged:

HERITAGE - Iove-hate with this "24 hour-bloom" producer. I've taken to spreading dirt over the petal litter.

COLETTE - Meilland'94, Cl. She takes high temperatures and refuses to blackspot. The rose slugs love, love her. Today she's imitating A. Darby's colors.

And blushes pink before shedding her petals

APRICOT NECTAR - Boerner'64, tall florib. This would be the world's best delicate apricot if only she lasted longer, were more floriferous, and kept cleaner foliage. I have 2 days to drool over each flower.

Ann - Best Kept Secret looks lovely at HMF. These pink-edged roses make gorgeous bouquets, 'Colette' has very little fragrance to my nose.

Lisa - even tho 'Colette' is not a 20 foot house eater, she does have 12 months to grow for us. The year I got her I had gophers! Abraham Darby got planted inside a wire mesh circle and I was too pushed for time to do the same for 'Colette'. To be honest I didn't even realize she was a climber. So popped her temporarily into a 5 gallon container & popped that 7/8's of the way into a hole. Temporary. 10+ years later and I've not corrected the situation. She's about 4 1/2 feet tall with modest pruning. During 100 degrees her blooms are an inch smaller but never fried. They are 3 1/2 inches now (low 70s at last). Her foliage is always petite. Not at all a cutting rose (1 inch stems). She's very cottage_ey.

Lisa - who is that Peekaboo rose on the one best photo thread? And the clematis name? Great picture!

I don't have Secret but I do have Best Kept Secret which I'm just starting to really like in her first year in the ground. I have a feeling as she gets more established I'm going to really love this rose.

I also have Heritage and I think it's more of a 48 hour bloom in my garden but I know what you mean. This was Heritage's first year in the ground and I discovered that while the blooms don't last long, she's nearly constantly in bloom which is quite a plus in her favor.

I love your Colette which has intrigued me for awhile, probably because I'm a fan of DA roses. Do you find her very fragrant?

Beautiful! I keep wanting Colette because the Romantica roses do so well here, but I’m afraid she will grow ginormous! Absolutely gorgeous! Lisa

Irisgal, I am so glad that I came back to your post! Putting a rose like Colette in a plastic nursery container keeps them smaller! That makes perfect sense. I've been planting in gopher cages, but had I realized this, there are some I would have planted in 5 gallon cans. Abraham Darby is one of them. You have no idea how happy I am to learn this! Thanks a million!

The rose in the photo you're talking about is Joan Fontaine. I think only Heirloom has her, and she's on sale until midnight tonight. The clematis with her is Prince Charles. It does very well here. Lisa

Lisa, thank you so much for names. Both Joan F. and Prince Chas. are 2 I've seriously regarded. Love that photo and the ? hollyhock makes a perfect trio.

Hope A. Darby will accept 5 gal. :-))

Not hollyhock, but the name escapes me. Seed I planted. I’ll check and get back to you on that one. Abe is already in his gopher cage, not digging him up now! :) Lisa

It was some sort of Sidalcea . Not sure of the variety. Lisa
