One person's treasure... 9 clumps, that's awesome. Will you heel them in until the spring?

probably..my husband went with me (halfheartedly lol) to get them and in the truck I said we could overwinter them in the compost pile (have a big one)..cool (45-50 degrees) and sunny tomorrow..will be working outside ALL day..maybe plant some?..just had to take them..

popmama..I have a reputation..I rescue plants!!..lol..a few times I've found plants on my deck..my neighbor in back doesn't even ask..they just show up!..even if she DID ask I would've said yes..who am I kidding...

just realized I should've asked "how big are the blooms?"..could be one of several white fragrant blooms that are smaller than plantaginea..I can't expect an ID without providing specific details..I'll see what they do next summer..the flash created the "snow" look in the pics..

newhostalady..I don't understand why she didn't keep them..her yard is large..maybe she needed to water them more..I bet you're right and they could've improved..but she DIDN'T want them so now they're mine..being fragrant gave me a good reason to tell my husband I need them haha..

Well you did way better than I ever did---that is, scoring on some free or cheap hosta! My horticultural society was trying to get rid of a few hosta. One was a Francee, which I didn't have so I was happy about that. The other was an undulata which I paid $2 for. I needed another undulata like I need a hole in the head! Next year I am ready to get rid of it. I need the room!

I bet a grouping of plantaginea would be real nice.

newhostalady..I've been on the receiving end of some nice hostas from 3 neighbors and my sister..I got a better look at the new ones today..nice sized clumps..now they're cozy in my compost bin..I scraped the compost away..grouped them together..clipped the leaves to about 5 inches..covered the gaps and 2 exposed sides with compost..doubtful-but if the weather holds up and I finish other work might actually plant some..

You're a lucky girl to get hostas from your neighbors and your sister! Looks like you've done a wonderful job of tucking the hostas in for the winter. Good idea to have some compost to add if necessary. I have planted a lot of my small pots into the garden and will also add some compost over the top to help insulate them for the winter. We will be getting our first frost tonight.

we have one of the largest lots in the neighborhood so my neighbors think "she has room"..my sister lives in a relatively new neighborhood with very little shade..her hostas were scorched..she said "take my hostas..they'll do better at your house"..the people I know are thoughtful and hate to be wasteful..wouldn't it be great if everyone was like that?..

Absolutely---it would be great if everyone was like that! I have yet to meet anyone that said "take my hostas..they'll do better at your house". I'm envious! LOL Maybe I just have to move down to Indianapolis!

newhostalady..I have enough hostas for both of us lol..and then today I ran around collecting seeds!..the pods were split and seeds were falling everywhere..I thought "oh no..they're impossible to pick up"..I'm going to scatter them along the back edge like last year..the more the merrier..

I envy the space you have to spread some seeds around and grow the hosta from seed. Sounds like a lot of fun!

newhostalady..tiny hostas are adorable..I've come to appreciate my space..I've read lots of comments where people are carefully planning what to buy, what to move etc because their space is limited..mine is not unlimited but bigger than average for a city lot..

don_in_colorado..Plantaginea was my first thought too..but if not I'm very happy that they're fragrant..this woman used to work at a very nice high end garden center and has great plants..she said "I have more" and I said "give me a call as you have plants to get rid of"..it works out great..she's generous and I'm greedy haha..
