Countertop advice

I’m remodeling my kitchen, keeping my existing cabinets but replacing the counters & backsplash. I’ve included a picture of my current kitchen.

I thought I was set on getting dark counters - either soapstone or dark leathered granite. But now I’m seeing a lot of pictures of kitchens with medium tone cabinets & white/ivory counters.

Any advice/pictures on my best bet as far a color & material for both durability & style longevity?

Either could work with those cabinets; honestly a matter of personal preference. I tend to prefer lighter colors because they brighten up the space, and its easier to see and clean dirt, but that's just my opinion.

I also prefer lighter colors, usually

    I agree both would work

Having said that-there is something about your space..great wood, trim..some warmth that I see paired with something natural..like soapstone

A question whether you can find this natural feel in lighter countertop as well. What material you should go for then. If you decide to go for lighter version.

Not a big of a deal either way; you can make either work. just my gut feeling. And depends on your style preference, the rest of the house of course..

Every material has its pluses and minuses; in Kitchens forum there are many threads that deal with that, including amazing Countertop Geology(that has already 6 long threads on the subject. it's about natural stones though. while there are also Quartz and whatnot)

as for style longevity-well so many styles are beautiful, and co-exist actually, and can be appreciated as long as they make sense and are authentic to the house..and to whoever put it all together, you know-in this case, you:)

I hope jhmarie sees this post and shows you a picture of her beautiful medium toned cabinets with a marble like quartz.

I imagine you have Googled images of both options. Which makes you happier? I like marble with with wood very much. For me, soapstone looks better with white cabinets.

Your cabinets are beautiful btw. You will have a fantastic kitchen no matter what you choose.

    Thank you Rita:)

I agree you can go either way - but consider keeping the backsplash light and simple whichever way you go.

Here is mine with light counters - it is an older kitchen refreshed with new counters, backsplash and "short apron" farm sink:

If you go for soapstone, the cream / white tile is still a good look:

theres so many great choices out there now, pick what you like. if your kitchen gets decent light, do the leathered black and get a lighter backsplash.

this is honed virginia mist granite.

    Cristallo Fusion Quartzite

    Taj Majal

leathered black granite (the benefit to the honed or leathered on the black stone is it greatly reduces the obvious signs of fingerprints, water marks or light shining and highlighting grease marks)

    or multitudes of creamy quartz
