having only 1 that came with the house gave me an excuse to buy more..you find yourself saying I only have 1, then 2, then you want one in front..on the side..one on the left AND the right..I couldn't stop lol..

this is interesting..I brought every single one of these maples home in my Honda CRV..seats folded fIat..would lay them diagonally in the car..propped up on beach towels..tied to hooks in the car..all of them made it safely..

What a wonderful sight! Mine lost their leaves too early by a storm :-( I could not immagine to have a garden without them...

so sorry to hear that your maple is declining :-( ..it was so beautiful!..at least double the size of mine..I saw a guy on a gardening show that had lots of Japanese maples in pots..he lived in Atlanta Georgia..I think? my climate is too cold to keep it outside in a pot..

I did a little research and it looks like you can keep it in a pot and overwinter it in the ground or in a sheltered and protected area. I'll have to give that some thought. If my neighbor's tree changes color as it did before, I'll take a picture and post it. It had looked florescent orange.

an orange maple sounds wonderful..I have a fothergilla that has orange fall color (sometimes)..I've been checking on it but the last time I looked no orange yet..I looked for orange annuals this year but couldn't find any that "grabbed me"..did a search on GW in maples for "Japanese maples in pots" - 2,421 discussions..might check it out on a cold winter day..

I have Margaret's book!..I wish I had her barn!..I overwinter these 7 potted macrophylla hydrangeas in my shed and they take ALL of the space..we put them in the garage yesterday..ONE night of cold temperatures did this..normal and green to shriveled..thought of moving them the day before but didn't do it (grouchy husband!)..if I add a potted maple he wouldn't be happy lol..love how maples look in a pot..

Some of my hostas go in our garage, but I am only allotted a small amount of space (husband's orders). So I had to hunt for more areas which led me to our window wells and our small shed. But I need more space---and decided our homemade mini greenhouse might also work. It's south facing (bad) so my husband has agreed to cover it for the winter. Now I have to see how many will fit and how much space is left so I can buy more hostas next year! LOL!

my biggest hydrangea June 2017..was overwintered in the shed - in a pot,inside a garbage bag,with leaves stuffed around it..no blooms without winter protection of some sort here..love your creative strategies to hold more plants!..sounds like me..it was from Margaret's book that I first heard of a potted hydrangea..she said something like "if you are desperate for one you could try a pot in a garage"....see if you can get it from the library..she gardens in a cold climate..I found it helpful..

Good idea to search for the book at the library. Unfortunately, they don't have it. But her website seems pretty good too.

Now I am back at wishing for a barn, larger shed, bigger garage, bigger property to hold all the pots (of hosta, Japanese Maples, hydrangea) I want . . . oh well, part of gardening is dreaming, isn't it?

Your Japanese maples are stunning! I am so envious. I planted two this year. It took me all summer to figure out where to plant them. I don't have a lot of suitable spots for them so I became overly analytical about where to place them. I am hoping they will make it through the winter.

I never thought of hydrangeas in pots. I may have to check that out. I've never had good success with them in the ground here.

Oh yes..when you're not outside gardening you're inside thinking about it!..

I have good conditions for maples..part shade with shelter from the big trees..I noticed when I moved in that lots of the neighbors had them..I think I have 13 now..a couple are small like 3-4 ft..macrophyllas don't do well here without special care..check the hydrangea forum..A LOT of info about pots, winter protection etc..I'm enjoying the challenge for now..will see if that lasts lol..

I counted today..was right..I have 13..pics 3 & 4 - the 2 small ones..one of them has a flat side..was damaged awhile back..deer?..didn't eat the branch..found it on the ground..made me mad..might move it..

zkathy..everything that I plant seems close to a tree haha!!..a professional might not approve of my placement but I like it!..we needed some mid height trees and shrubs..we had ground level and sky high not much in between..I'm happy that immediately after moving here I planted like a maniac..I love it now and it amazes me that I brought all of this home in my Honda..and I have had to fill in holes that I started to dig..I dig slowly and carefully and won't cut into roots of my big trees..

On a garden tour this summer, I visited a yard with 15-20 Japanese maples. The gardener had at least 6 in large pots that she pulls closer to her house in the winter. None have ever had a problem. We are in zone 5 or maybe 6 according to the latest zone maps. I tend to be conservative so I will pull one that I put in a pot this summer close to my home and perhaps wrap it loosely around the outside with burlap, not the top but just around the outside.

Nicholsworth55 and miles01612, you are really making me think it is possible for me to have a Japanese maple in a pot! I am getting excited about that! I will be on the lookout next spring. i would overwinter it in my garden shed. If there's no room, then I'd wrap the whole plant (pot and branches) in burlap and put in a sheltered area.
