BRAND new to gardening, need tree help!!

Hi y'all, we just built our house on what was a farm so was freshly plowed when we bought it, finally got SOME grass (weeds-ish, we think) and no trees, have a few questions. 1. According to the map thingy it says i'm zone 8? What northern mountainous type trees will grow here? Like Aspen, Cedars, Cypress's, anything that looks like it belongs in Colorado haha 2. We ranch so need grass grass, no clue what this junk is, we think baheia but don't know anything about grass except that coastal is a norm for cattle around here, san augustine of course and oats for winter. What can I plant now and start growing? It doesn't get cold here and normally we don't have a freeze at all, if we do like last year it lasts about 8hrs ish and that's it for the winter. Can I grow grass in winter or do i need to wait?

We need to know your location (state or larger metro city) as hardiness zones only apply to winter cold tolerance.......summer heat and humidity and rainfall patterns will have an equally significant impact on what can grow and when to plant it.

And a zone 8 will definitely get winter freezes. It reflects an average winter minimum temperature of 20F, well below freezing.

And just an FWIW, but do you see any of those northern type trees growing anywhere in your vicinity? If not, chances are pretty good that they will not like your climate and you may need to resort to some more climate-appropriate options.

Yes ashley, Colorado ranges from zones 4a-7a. If you could give the nearest city it would really help narrow possibilities.

Yeah, I don’t think there’s any part of Colorado that could be zone 8. Particularly if you’re close to the mountains.

Apparently the OP is located in Texas but likes the look of a more mountainous terrain, like in Colorado :-))

Can't help with providing any mountains but there are some trees that you can grow that would remind you of CO. I'd consider Arizona cypress, eastern red cedar, bald cypress, cedar or lacebark elm, Texas ash, bigtooth or shantung maples or various oaks.

Unless you have a lot of acreage, you want avoid the colonizing or suckering species like aspens or cottonwoods.

Sorry guys busy weekend didn't even check my phone! Yes gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) LOVE the look of Colorado terrain, husband doesn't want to move, so the house we built is designed to look like the houses up there, lots of wood and stone and the big big windows all over haha the one's you've suggested are exactly the direction I'm wanting to head in, spot on!! Thanks a bunch. I do have acreage, 15, but that's not considered a lot around here lol. Why would those be bad for acreage? Aspen was one of the one's I had in mind. There some trees out here that look like they could be mountainous terrain but I don't have a clue what they are. I can take pictures and post tonight when I'm headed home. We don't have a single tree on our property but the people around us do.

I tried to edit but apparently you can't do that on this site... I did the zone thing on here where you put in your zip and it tells you, it said I was 8. I'm near Cameron, there's no big town around me really, Waco is an hour away, College Station (Texas A&M) is an hour away as well.
