Almost lost these 2

I bought these as cuttings and arrived shriveled and dry. Im guessing because cut ends were not wrapped in moist papertowel or moist newspaper. Although i have received some before that were not wrapped either and arrived in perfect condition....anyway, I thought they were gonners. I cut off what was dead and I remembered reading to let the whole cutting soak in water. I did that, then i just potted them up and placed them in between my other Hoyas under the pecan tree. Shady and lots of humidity under there...well, it worked and they suvived. After months, they are finally putting out new growth.

these are 2 different Hoyas. So happy they both made it. Looks like this spotted one is a new favorite! :-D

Lydia, if your neighbor's tree is old it's probably a vintage variety. Depending on the variety of your tree, it may be a newer and vastly improved hybrid. You might have a variety that produces larger nuts, but could also be simply from being younger and more vigorous than your neighbor's tree.

If you haven't thought of a special feed, you might look for nut tree fertilizers, it might help production for next year.

I must admit that I have missed San Antonio and the general area since being in Florida, but my daughter says it's changed a lot and in some ways not for the better in some areas. That said, I'm getting on in years so I might return in the future to be near my daughter and granddaughter. I was always partial to the hill country, and the bluebonnets are beautiful when they're in bloom.

Good you were able to save them. Buying things internet/mail order can be a risky business.

Hi Lydia, I especially like the one with the beige spots and sunken areas between the lateral veins. You obviously did a good job with reviving the cuttings under that pecan tree. I well remember having pecan trees in a couple of different homes when I lived in the San Antonio area decades ago, amazing that you can walk around the yard and pick up delicious pecans.

I know what you mean! When i first moved here, i was so excited that my neighbor had huge pecan trees and would drop them into my yard. They were so yummy, even my dogs would eat them! Anyway, had to buy my own tree :) Its finally large enough to produce pecans. I was very suprised to see that my tree was a different variety than my neighbor's. His drops the pecans weeks before mine and mine are larger.

I think you are right on both counts. My tree is way younger and also is a different type of pecan im sure of it. I do need to look into some type of fertilizer. It didnt produce as many as last yr and to top it off we got squirrels "harvesting" our pecans >:-[

San Antonio is awesome and the Hill country is a beautiful area. Too bad don't make it up there much. I'm way way down south tx.
