The cabinets and the backsplash will be made of different materials, os a match is not likely. Darker or lighter would be fine- the countertop material matters a good bit in this equation too.

Don't worry about the exact match. You're right to be concerned mostly about the tone. Put your backsplash samples perpendicular to the counters(or their samples), and under the cabs if installed..don't lay them down, look at them how they'll be installed since that's how light will hit them slightly changing your perception of color. Try to do it in your space too. Look at day time, and in artificial light. As Rita said you won't have precise match since different materials will always reflect light differently...but you don't need one either. You just need them working together well.

I agree with April and Felipe. You can certainly mix whites, however, the one concern is that sometimes one white can make another look off.

You have a beautiful kitchen. I would get more samples of each and prop them up under the counter. look at them throughout the day and night. Light has everything to do with how your BS will look. Sometimes, night to day doesn't matter, but sometimes it does.

Would you consider a very almost white silver color tile?

Order some quake putty (Alcolin-sticky putty) ... I use it to temporarily stick up all kinds of decorating things that I am considering. I use a fair amount, but you have to watch heavy stuff as it will eventually slide off with the weight.

I would place the tiles along the counter and under the cabinets. Observe in natural daylight, with light on and with undercabinet light.

I have white penny tile (big walls of it) with my marble countertops and white cabinets. I went with a tile that is slightly darker than my marble because of the size of the area covered by the tile, I needed a bit of warmth. BTW, I repurposed an old hutch in the kitchen, moved it to the new back hallway, visible from the kitchen area, painted it navy, and it serves as extra kitchen storage space.

Meanwhile -- is it possible to provide a photo with better lighting of your samples on the top? On my MacBook, I can't see the colors well enough to help you.
