6ft Mamey Sapote

I have a mamey sapote I got last year. Its about 2 yrs old and was grown from seed and is about 6ft tall now. Problem is it's just growing straight up, should i go ahead and top it to promote branching? I know it works with mangoes but i've never tried it on a mamey? any advice would be great!
