No, seriously. Help.

This is our living room. The kids use it for puzzles and games. I'm finally going to take a whack at it. My home color palette is light blue, tan, white, and black.

How do I arrange all this?
What's staying (I think): piano, striped chairs, loveseat, big coffee table, coffee-colored armoire. I'm a DIYer on a tight budget and will be adding a rug and a white faux fireplace.

I might paint the room white as well...still debating.

Thank you!

Will there be a tv in this room or just a sitting room?

Can you provide the dimensions of the room?

Can the armoires go away? Try the keyboard where the globe is. Move the loveseat to where the keyboard was. Coffee table between love seat and chairs. Pull those four pieces in towards each other, creating space by the walls, until the feel close enough for conversation. If you've opened up gaps anywhere, move the doll house and kid chairs into the gaps. Also a large rug under the love seat, coffee table and chairs.

Your list is too long for what you want to keep. Keep whittling. Nix the armoire and the piano. And absolutely no fake fireplaces!

Nix the armoire maybe, but the piano? If someone goes out of their way to have a piano in the house, someone in the household must be playing it. I say keep the piano!

The armoire is very overbearing in that space the piano needs to be on an inside wall No faux fireplace , are the kids going to continue to use this space because you really need some attractive storage if they are . The coffee table is way too big for the sofa. I think a floor plan with measurements might be helpful

I've decluttered a bit. The piano is played (and indeed is on an interior wall), and the armoire has to stay....it's hiding all my dining room servingwear. I could part with the coffee table, though it provides a great area for puzzles, coloring, etc.

Here is a sketch of the floor plan. The room is used for music, sitting, and quiet games. There is no TV in here. (We have a great room a few steps away....big TV, lots of space, lots of seating.)

Thanks for all your good ideas!

How about some floor pillows for the kids to sit on?

Well, I am not qualified to give decorating advice, but like yourself I also am a DIY on a budget and a Goodwill Hunter... I love Annie Sloan chalk paint because it is so easy to use and transform furniture quickly. If the armoire is too dark for the room this paint could easily and quickly lighten it up. I like the color of the walls as they are.

I love the idea of some oversized floor pillows for kids!

The armoire actually is a DIY project I *just* finally completed, LOL! It was a lighter reddish brown; I gel stained it a dark coffee on purpose. (I almost went with black!) The rest of my house is very light and bright; I was hoping for a different vibe in this room.

you're right, that choice makes sense with the color of the piano. It probably balances both sides of the room now. I should just observe and not suggest. LOL... looks like you did a great job refinishing!

"I was hoping for a different vibe in this room"

It would be a huge help to let us know what that might be : ) . And you might actually be able to achieve that fairly easily with textiles -- rug, curtains, floor pillows, throw pillows on sofa, etc.

What is that large column in the corner for? I'd get rid of the column, which looks odd anyway, and move the floor lamp to that corner; it's better task lighting that way for anyone on the sofa or crafting on the coffee table.

I agree with those who've said no faux fireplace. Unless by faux you mean gas. And not a fan of the armoire and piano set on an angle. Maybe the armoire, but not the piano as well. Is there not room for them to be set squarely against their respective walls?

What are the two larger chairs by the window for? Do people actually sit in them? If so, is there a side table between them, for a book or mug or glass? Alternately, you could put the globe between them and put a side table on the side with more space.

Pull those chairs over towards the loveseat and coffee table for a sitting area. Maybe both with their back to the piano, or one near the lamp and one near the armoire. Maybe piano where the globe is/was and armoire where the piano is? Then it's not the first thing you see coming into the room. I would do big rug before pillows, personally.

The chairs are blocking the view and also sitting way too far from the sofa. Try the chairs facing the sofa across the coffee table.

Better still, move the loveseat to the wall facing the sliders. Then pull the chairs a bit closer to the coffee table so you have a conversation area. A rug that goes from the loveseat to the chairs will make the conversation area even more cozy.

I've made some changes! I've added a rug, lamps, and changed out the coffee table. Thinking about painting the walks a creamy white. Also considering draperies, although I love the unobstructed view. We don't have neighbors, so I'm not too worried about privacy.

    one more

Looks so much better. A question, can you turn the sofa and coffee table to face the chairs or am I not seeing something?

My you have been busy. Yes, I can see the armoire balances the piano.

Could the love seat go on the wall facing the window with chairs on the one side facing the piano? Simple panels each side of the windows - not made to open/close.

The column looks like it got stashed there from somewhere else and forgotten. It needs to go - it looks odd. I don't get the folks who keep insisting that the chairs face the loveseat. It seems the seating is all oriented to watch/listen to the piano! I'd add a more substantial side table between the chairs, however.

    Thanks for all the feedback!

We rearranged the loveseat--please see photo. Does this look better? This room is our quiet games/piano room. No TV. The previous arrangement did seem more conducive to listening to the piano and watching it being played.

Yes, the column did get stash back there! my mother-in-law owned a furniture and interior design business so I have inherited a lot of interesting pieces. I'm trying to figure out how to use them. I'm open to ideas! ☺ I have the matching column stashed in my powder room.

There is a fireplace surround stashed on the wall behind the love seat. I always wanted a faux fireplace filled with drippy candles. so my plan was to paint it white along with the room.

And yes, I definitely plan to add a pedestal table between the two chairs. Right now I just have a step stool there for placement. Any ideas for color--white, black, bronze, espresso?

Your last pictures look wonderful, I wouldn't paint the walls white because gray makes your space look cozy.

Instead? use chalk paint on the armoire.

LOL, I just finished redoing the armoire with gel stain!

Hi, your home look beautiful and cozy, don't change anything just add a valance, drapes or just a roman shade. As for the column if it were lower it could be used was support of a plant or to put a sculpture, but not in that beautiful room.

    looks MUCH better

Yeah, that column doesn't belong in that room, I would love to see white plain sheer curtains in both windows, would give it an even cozier feeling.

Such a pretty room! What do you think of switching the chairs with the couch, so that the couch goes flat in front of the lower window? This would give good natural light to read by when snuggled on the couch, and then you could see and enjoy the candles in the fireplace better. Also, the kids could easily move the chairs for more floor space when they need room for their play projects. To do this, you’d probably need to put the armoire flat against the wall next to window, or even have it trade places with the piano. I agree that the column is the odd man out in this room.

Put both columns on pedestals flanking the window, drill through for a curtain rod, and hang the sheers from them. It would look quirky, but kind of fun.

Just a thought but the room seems to need some reflective pieces in the room in silver or gold/brass. See pic below for ideas.

Also a pair of intense gold pillows to lift things up a bit in velvet, suede, beaded. Something unexpected and bright! Maybe knobs that sparkle on the armoire.

It looks so much better, how are you enjoying it. Now i'm getting a bit picky, but scoot your rug a little more under the 2 chairs and remove the column from that room. I like that the column adds interest. Could it go somewhere else. I like the fireplace where it is. Perhaps add a mirror over it to reflect the outside.

Your room is beautiful. I have one question... do you like the look of your fireplace? Usually, it looks better and more balanced not to block the fireplace with a sofa. It is just a suggestion but perhaps the chairs would look better in front of the fireplace and the sofa in front of the windows? Either way it looks very elegant and cozy!

I love the new look......bu also wonder about the fireplace; the placement looks odd to me. What about bookshelves on that wall instead? Love the idea of drapes too!

It's a fireplace surround - no fire box- just the surround. Kind of using it as a sofa table.

I prefer where you had your couch in the picture you posted on Saturday, not with its back to the fireplace. Great room!

Very pretty now overall, though like some of the others here I'm not a fan of the column. I'd also like to see the armoire placed flush against the wall rather than at an angle, where it seems to "intrude" or project too much into the room, especially since it's such a large and imposing piece, no matter what color it's painted.

I agree that curtains would be pretty and you seem to have plenty of room on either side of both windows to stack them back, so the panels frame the windows, leaving them entirely unobstructed, to keep the view and the light.
