Does this look good?

My husband and I have bought new furniture and disagree on the overall look. We have a few days to return the items, so we would like unbiased opinions.

The table and wood chairs (at the bottom edge of the photo) look like you tried to match them to the floor. Maybe a little more contrast. The furniture is too big for the room...try either fewer pieces, smaller pieces or a combo of both. The fireplace looks rather nice...perhaps paint it a color several shades darker than the walls. As someone else noted, none of the furniture faces the TV. I'd start by placing a sofa facing it, then plan from there. Also, plan it so there is more walking room...with this furniture it looks like it would be difficult to navigate. The two doorways look out of scale (too small) in relation to the ceiling height. Depending on what furniture you pick, I'd accessorize with lots of color...perhaps add a rug.

I don't mind any of the furniture for a family room area. It looks serviceable, comfortable, and like it could stand up to a Super Bowl party. I don't understand the tiny animal print rug. Get a real rug, a light-colored comfy one, lower the tv, remove some of the couch clutter, and put a little plant and some candles on the coffee table and you're good.

In the meantime before your blank slate, can you move the sofa so that it faces the TV and put the 2 chairs where the sofa is now. Might as well use what you have momentarily as props.

I'm glad to learn that the sofa should face the TV. It totally makes sense... I just thought it would be better to have the longer item go the length of the room! The space is so small with those 2 doorways on each side. I have about 10 feet between the doorways, 12 feet the other direction. I am realizing that I probably should have posted a photo of the kitchen as well, since it's an open concept layout. I will definitely take advice about TV height, wider media stand, smaller lighter coffee table.... but I am still confused about what color sofas or chairs would look good. The walls are beige, cabinets are dark gray stain, backsplash is a cool white with some gray and black accent. I don't know if my furniture should be cool or warm to flow with the kitchen... would patterned chairs compete with the backsplash? Would brown leather look stupid against almost black cabinets?...

Your home is beautiful. I like how you've complimented the pendant lights with entry light. You really want to go with lighter furniture in your living space. Moving the sofa was suggested by a few others.

Thank you shirlpp. I love that picture you posted! The light gray sofas would also go nicely with the gray in my kitchen backsplash. My only concern would be gray against beige walls/fireplace. It might be hard to tell in my pictures, but there is quite a bit of yellow in the walls...

Just curious about metal finishes - what are they, nearby in kitchen, etc.?

I like how it would seem with fireplace and warm counter....but this set has antiqued colors....

Hello. In my opinion, it looks not badly, but is a little empty. I would advise to add curtains and any decorative elements to the room and on walls.

You might be better to go with an oatmeal or taupe coloured sofa with accent chairs. I like how they have incorporated black with it in pics

Hello....How do you feel about that pillow on your sofa against your walls? What about the beige part of the rug on the floor? I think you are going to have to go with a light gray or something in the beige family for your sofa. You will bring in the warmth with pillows, artwork and chairs.

everdebz, the metal finishes are black near the front door, bronze in the kitchen. This house was newly built, although I didn't find it in time to choose the finishes. Irene, I like that black coffee table mixed with the oatmeal sofas. I especially like the first picture -- all neutral with a little greenery for color. I might be able to make that work for us! I'm scared of light colored fabric because of the kids... but I might just need to do it.

Take the TV down to no more than 4” above the console. There’s no relief from the ultra-heavy brown. Changing out the tables for lighter wood or metal and glass would lighten the situation. The chairs could remain, but the sofa needs to leave. A textured solid colour or a print would create better balance.

    The room definitely needs art.

I liked the photo Irene posted, but the fireplace being darker and more rustic than yours makes bit of difference....you could choose medium-neutral for furniture, imo: toasty. Do you like any color for pillows, art, etc... for example: red?

You had asked it patterned chairs would compete too much with backsplash? Not to me.

If you are worried re the children, another way to go would be a tan leather sofa with black and white accessories. I love leather with kids, I have it, so does my daughter with young children. Just put a protective conditioner on it every 6 months and they come up like new. Get some big art canvases, need one on that fireplace

I absolutely love the idea of tan leather with black and white accessories! We're farmers from Texas, so leather and cowhides appeal to us ;) I can see black and white tying it into the kitchen. As much as I love the backsplash, it has been kind of hard to blend with our style. I guess you would call it Moroccan? We didn't pick any of the finishes in our house, but we did just buy it new, so don't want to mess with changing any finishes. Here are the closeups. The cabinets are a very dark gray stained knotty alder.

Something like this over fireplace would look good, brings in the tan

You have a beautiful home and the other commenters have provided great ideas. Art for the room, over the fireplace, How about a photo enlarged on canvas of a beautiful Farm view from Texas, with the tans from the landscape? If you have an old or current photo of land that transports you home, take it or send it to a place that will give you a quality enlargement.

Thanks again everyone. We will definitely hang some art, lay a nice big rug, accessorize, etc. We basically got rid of everything we owned to start fresh at the new house, so the house is pretty bare right now! Our number one priority is finding the right seating so we can finally relax a little! I have already put in return requests for all of the pictured furniture. So now I know that we want something tan, gray, or oatmeal in color, maybe even a little patterned... the next step is finding good quality pieces. We are more "function over form" people, but hopefully we can find something lovely AND high quality :)

I haven't mentioned this yet, but our dining area is also open to the living area. Here is a picture, and we're having a custom built black walnut table that will be very similar to the one in the other picture.... so maybe we can play off of the black walnut

If ceiling is black, seems you have committed to a neutral sharp-contrast look...?! The beige/black pillows and art will stand out. Are so many options as to style... do you happen to like charcoal sketches?

    tisasshoppingemail thanked everdebz

The ceiling was stained the same dark gray as the cabinets. Charcoal sketches is something I hadn't even considered yet, but that's a great suggestion. I do love neutrals and lots of contrast. I have no idea why I thought black couches would look good against nearly black cabinets!! Overwhelmed with decisions I guess! Maybe some tan leather and black and white art??

So glad you talked about yourself! Rugged tan leather would be the medium tone between fireplace and cabinets.... I don't like my suggestions now for beige.

Looks like a conference room or waiting room. I would think big rug (light color, neutral pattern). Move buffet to wall behind couch. Move couch to edge of rug facing either toward or away from camera, and chairs either opposite couch or facing fireplace, and together- not spaced out far apart. Eliminate the ottoman or the coffee table. Remove the TV.

If you want texture/pattern, and rustic, like this photo: repeat basic tones already there: like you did DR table, flooring: use for art frames or mantel....

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

houzz: "Curtis replaced a standard mantel with a large live-edge one that works well with the wood beams in the room.
The new custom media wall crafted of white oak and walnut is a big part of this room’s transformation. 'Using two species gave us two different patterns of wood grain going in two different directions,' Curtis says. She also designed it so the poufs — used as footrests and extra seating — could tuck underneath the floating cabinet."

Too dark, too bulky in scale for the size of the room. and too matchy-matchy . The furniture actually disappears against the dark floor. a the room itself is light and inviting. Why not build on that?
I would looooove to have a live edge walnut mantle! Of course, with an entire house that needs furniture, I don’t know if my husband would be too happy about me replacing a mantle right now! That picture is gorgeous.

Idk if cheaper than you'd think {?} For example a 42" is $215 - could it be stained a bit darker, idk.... in a 6" x 6" width....

If you want to keep some of the dark furniture, all you need to do is get a light rug, and perhaps get a lighter coffee table/ottoman. Then add some lighter accessories. It should work well.

    hi tia, any progress?

Hi - I'm not a designer, but I vote for the tan with black and white accents that Irene posted. I think it would go really well with the existing finishes and paint color and the leather would be easy to maintain with the kids. I had a light gray sofa with little kids; it was horrible even after having it cleaned. We have charcoal gray fabric and it's much better. Leather would be even easier.
